TMI Sorry - Strange 'super' period

This will probably be TMI for most, apologies

I have been on the Implanon Implant for almost 4 years now (had a new one inserted in May 08) and as a result I havent had a period in all that time - had quite forgotten what it felt like LOL.

About a month ago, for around 2 weeks I experienced some kind of discharge - almost like 'old' blood. Not a lot, but enough to get me wearing panty liners. Intermittantly over the last few years I had similar, but only for a day at a time and as it was always after DH and I had sex, I just put it down to that and didn't worry.

Since Friday I have been expriencing some extraordinarily heavy bleeding. Mostly very bright but with lots of clots. Some lower belly pain and cramping but not much (I thought I had maybe pulled my back).

The 'amount' I am losing had me looking at the NHS Direct Website, but depending on one yes/no answer I am told either to phone NHS Direct or to go to A&E......

I am overseas, so cannot get thru to an 0845 number and I dont have an A&E as such (I do have a doctor, but I can reach them at the moment)...and wouldnt be able to get an appt till tomorrow in any case.

Anyone have any ideas why this should be happening now? and what it could be if not 'just' a very strange period.

.....just to add, although this may be totally irrelevant. When I was pregnant with DD I 'knew' very early on that I was pregnant - I just felt it IYKWIM. Around Christmas I had the same feeling, but dismissed it as I have an Implant (and frankly wasn't getting much sex).....of course now I am thinking about it again.

It sounds like it would be worth a quick visit to your dr just to get checked out in case your pregnancy fears are founded. That said, since I had ds I have had incredibly heavy periods to the point of "flooding" literally every 20 minutes at times. I am now on tranexamic acid to help reduce the problem. I have no experience of the implant but I am sure someone else here will be along to give their experience on it. I would take some paracetamol to help the cramps and go to bed with a hot water bottle if it were me!

I had an early miscarriage last year and thought it was a heavy period. Ended up in hospital - it's worth getting checked out.

Hi, I don't know if my experience will help, but I have had implanon for almost 18 months, no periods as such for ages, just a bit of spotting, (TMI alert) either really pale or end-of-period like. Or some that is just normal discharge but darker. I have just had a period that lasted nearly a month and was "flooding", also a bit painful, though no clots as such I don't think. I have had a possible UTI during that, wi tha bizarre rash for nearly 3 of those weeks. I don't know if any of the "symptoms" are connected. Then 2 weeks of spotting and now back to thankfully lighter period.

I would see your GP. There is no harm in asking. (TBH mine wasn't concerned when I mentioned the "All or nothing" nature of my periods ATM, but I didn't really push the point.)

Well I have been to the Docs and she was very nice but couldnt really do that much..... She has taken blood for HCG (?) test, and has prescribed something to minimise the blood flow (trans whatever like bodiddley), but couldnt say one way or the other if just an arberation (sp?) or a MM. I wont get blood results till Thu.

Pain is the same, not increasing as is blood flow so I am hoping that this is just a 'one off'. Really hope not a MM as not sure how I would react (I really want another LO, DH doesnt and that is hard enough IYSWIM)

One last thing (sorry!) if it is a MM will I have to have a D&C or anything do you think? I dont really want a hosp visit if I can help it.

mousemate the chances of you having a d&c are slim, especially if you have already passed a lot of blood etc. can you try a pregnancy test yourself? i had a mmc and i still had a positive read for 2 weeks after....just a thought x

Barbie, thanks - The doc said there was no point in doing a urine test, but I may well buy one myself. If it is pos, then at least I will be prepared before the blood results on Thu...... feel quite strange at mo, like in limbo, prob best not to think about it.
