So how long after giving birth is it normal to not have a period?

I had ds 8 months ago and still have not had a period. With dd I was back to normal after about 6 weeks so it's a big difference. I bf them both but with dd I expressed a lot, whereas with ds I never do so that might be why I suppose. ds is still on anything upwards of 3-4 breastfeeds (more if he is poorly) a day. When should I start to worry? Or shouldn't I worry at all?! I have had 2 reminders for a smear test but have recieved conflicting advice about whether I should wait until my periods return.

I didnt have a period until I stopped feeding at 15 months.

I'm 10 months post birth and still no period. It was over a year coming back after having dd.

Can't advise re smear.

I didn't have a period for 6 months after DD then found I was PG she was exclusively BF. I then didn't have a period til after I weaned DS at a year.

I had a smear in the period I was feeding DS

I got my periods back at about 9 months with all of mine.

You can have a smear whilst breastfeeding, don't need to be having periods. (Shouldn't have a smear within 12 weeks of birth though). (Am ex-practice nurse)

Don't forget even if you don't have periods you still need contraception.

It's good to know that lots of you took a while to get back to normal so thank you I will book a smear in the next few weeks then.

Mine came back after about 10 months, was still breastfeeding at the time about 3-4 times a day.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 15/02/2009 12:49

i think DS was about 18 months when mine came back. was still BFing.

ThingOne · 15/02/2009 14:22

Can`t really remember-ages!Be careful as you can still get pregnant!I have a very small gap between two of mine!!

Well how is that for bizzarre? Guess what I just got?? I guess the smear will have to wait for a few weeks. It explains a lot about how I have been feeling recently- I'm not crazy, it was just PMT Thanks for all your help anyway
