WHY is it so hard to find info on when to have a smear test after birth of a child?

I keep getting conflicting info

I am BF and haven't had a period yet

I am booked for a smear today, 14 weeks PP

I have a history of dodgy cells and had colposcopy 5 years ago

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!!

i would book for one. my midwife told me as soon as your post-partum bleeding has stopped it's fine to go for one

PuppyMonkey · 11/02/2009 10:04

I had one done at my 6 weeks check up.

I had one done after ds1 was born at the same time as I had my coil fitted - maybe 10/12 weeks. I was warned that the cervix isn't always back to 'normal' by then and the results might be inconclusive, which they were.

Don't know if having a CS makes a difference though.

I had mine about 8 weeks after ds was born and it came back ok.

I had mine at my 6 week check up, although in reality i think it was more like 8 weeks PP.

Go, have it done, it may come back as an inadequate sample, but it may at any other time too.

I had mine done with a coil fitting at 8 week check. Inadequate sample, went again 3 weeks later, no problem.

There is space on the form to make it clear that you arent menstruating at the moment.

2pt4kids · 11/02/2009 13:19

I had one 9 weeks after I had ds1 and that was clear enough to give me the ok.
TBH if you've a history of problems then its worth going now and i on the off chance you get an unclear reading, you can go back in a couple more weeks.
Its not nice, but worth the risk of having to re-do for peace of mind i'd say.

Our practice nurse won't do one until baby is 6 months old. I had my coil fitted when he was 3/4 months and asked her to so a smear while she was in there and she told me I had to wait.

MamaG · 11/02/2009 15:16

I went and got it out of theway

hopefully will be ok
