UTI's - anyone got any remedies that work for them?

DD1's got another UTI, her second in two weeks, and is on another course of antibiotics.

She's really suffering, and although I know that the anti-b's will work in two or three days, have you got any tips on how to make it better for her till then?

Am I right in thinking that she shouldn't go swimming with school tomorrow, and I didn't put bubble bath in her bath tonight?

She's 8 btw.

Thanks

Must read posts before posting!

(That's better!)

Water water and more water, make her drink and drink!! at least a pint an hour!

I wouldnt put bubble in the bath anyway, that may be what is causing the recurring uti?

Not sure about the swimming!

calpol or nurofen or both may help.

cranberry juice is good for flushing things out.

maybe get some cymalon or something of that ilk?

Is the GP looking at what's causing the recurrence? Could there be some underlying cause?

Milliways · 09/02/2009 21:16

My DD refused Cranberry juice, but would drink mixed Cranberry & Orange.

She had recurrent UTI's and it was put down to her drinking too much freesh Orange juice - she used to have it for breakfast & lunch. We cut it all out (and ribena - also acidic I think) and it made loads of difference.

Was sooo embarrasing for her having to keep going to the loo at school. She had a note that allowed her to just go without putting her habd up for a few weeks.

GP's referring her to the hospital, in case there's a problem, but until two weeks ago she'd never had a UTI. I've never really suffered with them, so don't know what to do to help her.

Really, a pint an hour! That sounds like a lot!

What's Cymalon?

thanks

ooooo Milliways, she drinks hardly anything except blackcurrant squash - perhaps that's causing the problem? But that's not new, she's always loved blackcurrant. Perhaps I should try some of that flavoured water for her - she won't drink plain water.

It is a lot its to flush your system (infection) out! plus it helps when you are weeing(wanting to) so much to have a little to wee out. as it burns and hurts so much when you need to wee but there is nothing there! I find it helps me.

cymalon is for cystis its a powder which you add water to which makes your wee less acidic. (i think?!)

I would give painkillers tho, as it is an infection so can cause a temp.

Hope your little one gets beter soon.

If you want professional advice you could ring nhs direct?

DD didn't used to drink plain water - now she lives on it! (It's very cheap when you go clubbing )

Will she take it VERY diluted? The flavoured water is worth a go though.

BarkingHarriet · 10/02/2009 21:38

Thank you for your help everyone - she's been drinking flavoured water all day, ok, so blackcurrant flavoured but it's got to be better than squash!

She does seem a lot better today - perhaps we caught it in time.

cranberry does nothing and is only preventative. It stops bugs adhering to the wall of the bladder so can prevent one starting but nothing for an actual bacterial uti.So water and lemon barley to neutralise the urine and stop it hurting and painkillers too HTH
