High blood sugar, worried I might have diabetes

I tested my blood sugar last night out of curiosity using a friend's machine reading was 8.5. I hadn't eaten anything for 4 hours and even then it was only ham salad.

In view of what I'd (not) eaten I'm a bit concerned.

I have been drinking more than usual the last year but still not excessive. I used to just have a drink with a meal but now feel thirsty inbetween meals and have more cups of tea.

Pop to your GP. They will sort you out.

tea is a diaretic (sp?), it makes you wee more. Try swapping it for water/caffine free/juice.

Well your reading probably isn't an accurate reflection of your blood sugar done like this.If your friend is monitoring her/his blood sugars they will be doing it at certain times eg, before eating food and then say 2 hours afterwards and then there will be a value that it's supposed to be between if its being well controlled. You did one randonly 4 hours after eating a sandwich and didn't take into accoiunt what you might have eaten before that, some foods keep your blood sugars up for ages so even something you ate a few hours or drank will have an effect on the value.. What you need to do is see your gp as scrooged suggests and you will probably be sent for a fasting blood glucose test.
