ds2 has a temperature of 39.8

and the nurse wasnt even vaguely worried not like me....flapping round like a bloomin chicken!!! I took him to the docs this afternoon cos his ear was really red as well and i was worried about him having an ear infection. The poor mite is dosed up well. The poor mite is just clung to me like a little limpet.....Hes crying so much and wont eat and Im struggling to get him to drink. Ive given him a cool bath and that seems to have helped a bit, even though the poor love was shivering all the way through. I hope he sleeps tonight! I am supposed to be going to my counselling session tomorrow....

Oh bad luck titania. Don't worry about the food - none of mine eat a thing when they have a temperature. The drinking is important of course. Is it an ear infection?

DT1 has just gotten over a run of very high temperatures. It may be the same bug. There's not much else you can do really. I hope you manage to get to your session and wishing your DS better.

Is he prone to high temperatures? My ds2 used to have rocketing temperatures for no apparent reason - used to cause him to halucinate even - very wierd. He doesn't get them so much now though. Only mention it because his temperatures were much higher than his siblings' and maybe your ds2 is the same.

Ds' temp regularly goes over 40 degrees and none of the doctors seem to be bothered about it. I think some children just burn up more than others. He got up to 40.7 the other day which was an all-time logic household record. Hope your little boy is better soon, Titania.

I can't believe I am up at this time....ds2 has decided that Im not allowed to sleep. He has has a bottle of milk and half a biscuit but I am having such trouble bringing his temperature down. He is dosed up to the eyeballs and has had tepid baths. I am so tired, I am sat here in tears. I haven't slept for 2 nights in a row. I am exhausted.

I just want to give you a load of (useless i know) sympathy. Sleeplessness is just the WORST thing. Hope he (and you) have dropped off by now.

nope....still awake.....and ds1 and dd have got up now too. dds in a mood for some reason.

Sometimes I find that just taking ds downstairs helps because it's generally cooler down there. You could try putting a cool flannel on his forehead at regular intervals. Don't know what else to suggest really. I hate outwaiting temps Hope your day gets better. Hugs.

we have been downstairs since 3am! I was doing my ironing at 5am! oh well as least its done i suppose! I am still waiting for him to go off to sleep. Even if i cuddle him or lay down with him he still screams and wriggles. Not sure what to do now....

Morning titania, you poor poor things. My dd1 is prone to ear infections and they send her temp rocketing. She once got to 42.3 and I took her to the gp who wasn't phased just gave me antibs. Well I wasn't happy with that and phone the NHS help line. Got a really really fab nurse with kids who helped brilliantly. Basically... No more tepid baths. According to her its better to strip them off and put a luke warm flannel to help them sweat. If he shivers then the body will react by making him warmer so it goes the wrong way. Same with fans - use water and fans to cool them so they're comfortable but not so they shiver. Also use a combination of neurofen and calpol/paracetamol. Not sure how old your little one is so please ask a phamacist but when dd1 was 2.9 I was told to alter 4 hourly. Now that she's 5 (and still can peak with her temps) I can alter two hourly i.e. every two hours she can have paracetamol or neurofen with only 4 neurfens in 12 hours (which means its better to give the neurofen every 6 hours). I'm not medical so can only tell you what's been advised to me.

Anyway she told me (and others have confirmed that she was right) that children are capable of far higher temps than adults however as long as they are improving whilst in the middle of medicine then the doctors feel that its under control. At the same time I was told to check her regularly (i.e. setting the alarm during the night etc) and to keep records of what her temp was doing for telling doctors if I thought that the battle was beening lost.

Finally if the temp stays high for longer than 3 or 4 days to go back to the doctors with all my records.
