Really bad toothache in pregnancy, pain making me cry

Hi, I have a bad tooth which needs a root canal, but dentist can't do it until after baby born in June, and it's causing me real grief this week. My gum is swollen and has raised the tooth so that when I bite or even talk it bangs my other teeth. Paracetamol doesn't seem to touch it. I have an appointment next monday but I don't know how I'm going to get through the night let alone the rest of the week, and advice/suggestions? Please!!!

Oh, that sounds awful. I had a root canal when I was 7 months pregnant, so it can be done. Maybe try ibuprofen as well until you get back to the dentist?

thisisyesterday · 13/01/2009 20:13

why won't your dentist do it?
i've had root canal work done whilst pregnant before. there is no problem with it.

I would get an emergency appt for tomorrow and get it sorted

Ledodgy · 13/01/2009 20:13

Are you sure the dentist can't do it unitl after the baby is born? When I wa spregnant I had bad toothahe and was given the option of having the tooth removed or starting root canal. I had the tooth removed because you can't see it but if I'd have hosen root canal they would have done it no problem.

if the gum is swollen.. it sounds like an absess. ring dentist tomorrow.. get an emergency appointment for tomorrow.. if there is an absess you'll need it cleared before treatment.

you could sip warm drinks and see if that eases it off.

froggy16 · 13/01/2009 20:19

She said she won't do it because the tooth has 3 roots instead of 2, and she needs to do lots of x-rays. I would rather just have it done because it flares up every few weeks, though never this bad. Aren't the x-rays bad during pregnancy?

Also I didn't think ibuprofen was safe to take in pregnancy?

i think they prefer to wait if possible. but no, there is nothing wrong with having a few x-rays done.

honestly, my last root canal was a real pain, but I was in agony and my dentist had no qualms in treating it.

thisisyesterday · 13/01/2009 20:22

i agree about the abcess though, and that may well be why the painkillers aren't touching it.
nothing seems to help the pain from an infection.

honestly, really do go tomorrow. ring first thing and get an emergency appt

oxocube · 13/01/2009 20:23

Can you see the tooth or is it right at he back? If the latter, I would have it removed rather than suffer like this. Toothache is awful

froggy16 · 13/01/2009 20:25

I think I will ring them first thing, I can't wait until Monday. Thanks everyone, it's really helpful to know I don't have to wait for a root canal, I'm going to ask to have it done asap.

The tooth is second from the back, so no you can't really see it. I did ask dp to pull it out for me cos I was so desperate earlier but he wouldn't!!

IMHO toothache is the worst pain in the world. I remember about 3 years ago having an infection under a crown and the pain was unimaginable, much worse than childbirth (and I've had my 3 dcs with no pain relief) Feel very sorry for you and hope you get it sorted tomorrow

LyraSilvertongue · 13/01/2009 20:31

Try clove oil. Just don't get it on your tongue because it burns.

hunnybun1981 · 13/01/2009 20:33

Hi
My sister in law is a Maxillio Facial (sure I have spelt that wrong!) nurse and when DH has had infection/abcess before and been in a lot of pain she recommended the following which according to DH really helps:
Dissolve a lot of table salt in hot water (as hot as you can possibly bear in your mouth). Then hold the water in your mouth over the painful area until it cools down a bit then spit it out. Repeat until you have used a glass full or so. And then do this every few hours or so. Don't sloosh the water around, or gargle it - literally just hold it over the inflamed tooth.
Hope this helps - DH has really suffered with this and he has been able to double dose on paracetamol and ibufrofen, which isn't an option for you.

I had a tooth out at 27 weeks pregnant due to an abcess, I couldn't wait until after the birth to have something done. The night before I had ended up in A & E and they let me have some stronger painkillers despite my pregnancy. Could you see your GP and see if it is possible to take something?

Pregnant women have a higher chance of getting exposed to dental problems.Pregnant women have high chances of losing teeth or experiencing pain during their tenure.
These are some causes for toothache during pregnancy remedy : morning sickness, calcium deficiency, diet changes etc. Here are some remedies
-Cloves are a great ingredient to ease out the tooth pains during pregnancy. Either you can eat the clove and chew it as long you can.
-Hot water a well-known remedy, the best and simplest solution seen. You don’t have to do anything except preparing yourself some warm water every day and gargle it by adding one pinch of salt to it.Hope this helps. Smile

Garlic! Seriously. Slice a bit up and chew it. You'll stink but the benefits are instant.

And yes, teeth are a nightmare during and after babies. I've had six children and lost 6 teeth. I have dentures at the age of 39. Not happy!
