Another little hole just below his bottom hole - 4 day old DS

There seems to be a hole just below his bottom hole. Midwife due on thursday, but thought I would see if any other MN's have experienced this ?

My friend said it could be a deep dimple, but they should of picked it up when they discharged us from the hospital on Saturday.

Which side of his bottom hole? If you are changing a nappy, legs in the air is it under his bottom then?

My DS4 has this, it's like a very deep dimple. I rememebr them looking at it very closely when he was little but MW said it was fine. His two male cousins have the same and according to my MIL so does my BIL.

Hope this helps

mppaw · 06/01/2009 21:35

yes mehgalegs, with his legs in the air it is under his bottom.

Will defo mention it to midwife on thursday.

I have heard that it can run in the family, will have to send an email asking both families if anyone has 2 bottom holes

Good plan.

My DS has this, and now he's 3 you don't even know it's there. Caused a bit of confusion at the birth, i think the consultant may have been a bit overtired as he pronounced 'it's a girl'

They should have picked up on it when checking him over though - just let the midwife reassure you

bran · 06/01/2009 21:38

Is it roughly where the bottom of his spine is? I think it's called a sacral dimple (wild guess), anyway DS has one and it's fine, I never even thought to ask anyone about it.

constancereader · 06/01/2009 21:39

my ds has one too and is fine.

backalleysally · 06/01/2009 21:40

My DD has one of these. If its the same its called a sacral dimple. My DD's was noticed at birth and scanned at 8 weeks of age.
Mention it to your midwife but nothing to worry about I wouldnt have thought.

Kbear · 06/01/2009 21:41

My DD had a "deep sacral dimple" at the base of her spine, HV mentioned it but no one at the hospital did when they checked her before we left so i assumed it was nothing to worry about. Midwife should be able to reassure you.

Congratulations by the way!

Tidgypuds · 06/01/2009 21:43

My DS has one too, its called a sacral fissure, we saw a consultant about my DS as it seemed quite deep but we were reasurred after the put a tiny little prob in it, it was closed at the end and was nothing to worry about.
Indeed 7 years later its now quite a cute shallow dimple. As they grow it stretches and becomes more shallow.

Mention it to the midwife and she will probably refer you to the GP and they will do a little test.

Goober · 06/01/2009 21:43

My 14 year old DS had this when born. It was a big dimple but looked like another bum hole. It was above his bum. Went within his 1st year

MumtoCharlieandLola · 06/01/2009 21:43

My ds has one of these, I call it his second bottom, my dh has one too and often talks out of his !

Tidgypuds · 06/01/2009 21:44

probe sorry aboot the rest of the typos!

littleboyblue · 06/01/2009 21:45

My ds has a very deep dip behind his bottom hole. I noticed it when we first got home and had a proper chance to get him naked and just stare at every inch of him. Thought it was a bit strange as never seen it on anyone else (not that I go around studying naked bums, but ykwi)

Megglevache · 06/01/2009 21:45

Goober · 06/01/2009 21:46

That image is just what DSs looked like.

littleboyblue · 06/01/2009 21:48

My ds's isn't quite like that, similar though but the extra dip is still in the crease iykwim.

NotBigJustBolshy · 06/01/2009 21:48

Another ds with a sacral dimple here. If it is very deep, he will be referred for a scan, but likely as not it is just a dimple. My ds's is now barely visible and he is not quite 4.

fishie · 06/01/2009 21:50

i have got one and so has ds. i didn't know it was an actual thing until this thread. how interesting.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 06/01/2009 21:56

I have this and so does DD. I was told it was Spina Bifida Occulta which is a very mild form of spina bifida. DD also has a bt of hair and red patch just by her dimple.

DH also refers to mine as a "2nd bumhole".

Whatever it is it hasn't caused any problems. The midwife also missed DD's "dimple".

Kbear · 06/01/2009 22:03

Having just looked at that link, my DD's wasn't as deep as that and was just one hole. I think it's almost gone now, have forgotten about it and don't look at her bum anymore ha ha

uberalice · 06/01/2009 22:03

Both of my DSes have sacral dimples. They're quite shallow, and you can see the base of them, so nothing to worry about, I've been told. It's actually reassuring to see that so many people have them, as I was a bit freaked out at first.

NotBigJustBolshy · 06/01/2009 22:04

Oops, dh has just pointed out that ds inherited his "funny bum" from me.
