Right sided abdominal pain - any ideas?

Have had bad pain in lower right abdomen for last 4 days. Last night it kept me awake & I had to get up at 4am to take painkillers - they mask it but it never really goes away. Anyone got any ideas?? Putting off going to my GP as had a very bad experience with Mirena Coil a couple of months ago and clinic which removed it said they were going to put in a complaint against my GP. Havent been back since then.

oh gosh, can you find another GP? even if you sign on as a temporary patient with another doctor?

i suppose there's lots of things it could be, kidney infection, that sort of thing. are you super-sure you're not pregnant first of all?

BCNS · 05/01/2009 13:21

could be anything from ibs, dodgey appendix, ovulation.. etc..
If it's keeping you awake at night you need to pop to the GP.. make an appointment with a different gp at your surgery if your not happy with your GP.. but it does need to be checked out

Webstermum · 05/01/2009 13:30

You really need checking out .. go to a drop in clinic if you dont like your GP... I left similar pain and ended up needing an emergency appendectomy (not a pretty scar )...it could just be something as simple as constipation but really needs a professional to take a look

If you press down on the area that hurts is it more painful when pressing or as you release?

Webstermum · 05/01/2009 13:40

Hurts like hell to press on it but then its even worse when you let go - kind of throbbing

Read the quote below, don't want to panic you but I really would get it checked out

"As appendiceal inflammation increases, it extends through the appendix to its outer covering and then to the lining of the abdomen, a thin membrane called the peritoneum. Once the peritoneum becomes inflamed, the pain changes and then can be localized clearly to one small area. Generally, this area is between the front of the right hip bone and the belly button.

The diagnosis of appendicitis begins with a thorough history and physical examination. Patients often have an elevated temperature, and there usually will be moderate to severe tenderness in the right lower abdomen when the doctor pushes there. If inflammation has spread to the peritoneum, there is frequently rebound tenderness. Rebound tenderness is pain that is worse when the doctor quickly releases his hand after gently pressing on the abdomen over the area of tenderness"

That does sound like your appendix, if I was you I would either go in to A&E, or else phone NHS direct and see what they say...

Fingers crossed it is nothing, but best to check it out. Hope you are better soon.

Webstermum
just wondering how you were doing?

Webstermum · 08/01/2009 10:46

Aww bless Floria Thanks for thinking about me - have been awol for a few days as we had a death in the family Went to docs and they think it could be ovarian cysts causing the pain - maybe caused by that bloody Mirena! Have to go see someone at hospital so will have to stay with GP for now so they can do referral (god knows how long that will take) Feeling better though & they gave me painkillers too so can dose up on them & make it bearable
