Can you see inside her throat? We were in the same position recently with ds1- tried holding him upside down (as they open their mouths then) but still couldn't tell- he wouldn't open it far enough. If there is a throat infection the breath often smells bad (but it can anyway if they're not eating).

I ahven't givem ds1 antibiotics for 3 years but I was worried that he might have an missed throat infectoion and get quincy! So sympathies. If you can see inside her mouth look for white spots on the tonsils.

I use homeopathy now a lot and it works for us.

There are plenty of other antibiotics other than augmentin. Although the research wssn't great I'd still avoid augmentin with an autistic child unless it was life or death because they often have problems with ammonia levels anyway I think (only skimmed this will have a look later) and I think that's the potential problem with augmentin.

don't know about the risks but co-amoxiclav is the same as Augmentin. . Augmentin is the brand name.most tonsilitis or ears infections are treated with simple amoxicillin though unless the infection has been particularly stubborn.

socci I think augmentin is mainly prescribed for stubborn ear infections or skin (ds1's script immediately pre-regression (!!!) was for the most awful skin infection I have ever seen- and it didn';t bloody work!

Any chance a dr could see inside her throat? When I was worring about a throat infection my mum said there was no way they'd prescribe antibiotics as there was no way they could see inside his throat.

I bloody HATE ds1 being ill as I feel like a f** vet! DS2 has been able to point to where it hurts, open his mouth etc from before the age of 2, so major sympathies coming your way.

If you CAT me my homeopath may be abvle to recommend someone in your area.

A nice aromatherapy rub is lavender and thyme- helps with chestiness etc. At least the dr managed to have a look!

Hi Socci, I don't know about the allergy thing (would NHS direct be able to tell you?) but I have given DD1 Amoxcillin at least 5 times and it's always seemed to work brilliantly and quite fast (24 hours)- though I suppose you can never be completely sure they wouldn't have got better without. I always felt terrible about giving it to her (only did it because she was obviously in so much pain) but having DD2 has really put things in perspective. She was on intravenous antibiotics (mainly Vancomycin which is often described as the anti-biotic of last resort!) for about 7 weeks continuously. It did knock her immune system for a while, I must admit, but she's now a healthy as a horse. If your DD is in a lot of pain, I bet she'll be really happy to have the medicine, even if it's a nightmare getting it down her

DH had an allergic reaction to penicillen as a child so he was advised to never have it again. But DD had amoxicillin for a UTI last year and she was fine (no sign of her inheriting her dad's allergic reaction). Ear infections are awful, I'd definitely go for it.

Socci - I'm allergic to both penicillin & erythromyacin (I like to make my GPs work hard when they need to prescribe me anything ) and I asked about allergy inheritance for antibiotics and the GP said categorically that it just didn't work like that.

Neither ds1 nor ds2 are allergic to penicillin (thank god, although I too held my breath when they took it for the first time and scrutinized them for days for any slight sign of it not agreeing with them).

Socci - I'm allergic to penicillin and none of my 3 are (well not yet anyway!)

Socci give her some probiotics as well- it'll help with any gut side effects. Poor little thing- hope she's better soon.
