Can I have your cough remedies please?

I've been coughing for 6 weeks now and I've had enough. The doctor's given me abs but they haven't had time to kick in yet. I've been coughing that much that my chest is hurting and my windpipe is burning when I breathe. Anyone got any good remedies please? I've got an inhaler from doc but it doesn't work, in fact I cough more. Honey didn't work, cough medicine didn't work, warm drinks didn't work. Am pretty desperate now because it hurts! TIA

What cough medicines did you try? I'm all in favour of natural remedies, but when I had the windpipe-burning-chest-wracking-cough-from-hell a few weeks ago, dh persuaded me to take some Benelyn Original (at night, it knocks you out a bit) and it did help a lot. The next day, I coughed less because the vicious circle of cough-irritation-cough got broken. I used it once more, then didn't need to again

The best cough suppressant is codeine linctus, but its prescription only of course - dh was given it for viral-induced asthma, along with a couple of other things, and it worked like a charm. He was rather, um, out of it for a day or two though

I thought cough medicines had been shown to have no effect. However, teh good news is that chocolate is supposed to work.

Benelyn's always worked for me too

Furball · 31/12/2008 13:27

manuka honey [swoon at the price, but worth it] - a teaspoon a couple of times a day

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2008 13:31

Benelyn you say? Probably wouldn't be a good idea though, DD still wakes up a lot in the night and me being conked out would be a bad thing. Same with codeine linctus. Damn.

Have plenty of chocolate to eat though Any excuse. Will have a look at the manuka honey when I go out in a bit, see if I can stretch to it. I am desperate now, my chest is killing. I tried normal honey and it did soothe my throat but I was still coughing.

Glycerine mixed with lukewarm water can help with an irritated throat or windpipe.

I'm just getting over a horrible cough too - I had to hold a hot water bottle against my chest at night as it hurt so much (my ribs and stomach muscles really hurt too)

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2008 13:35

Where do you get glycerine from, a pharmacy? Might try the hot water bottle too. It feels like all my muscles are strained, but also burny too. Thanks everyone

This always works for us: warm water, couple of slices (and a good squeeze) of lemon, few slices of fresh ginger and 2tsps of manuka honey. Drink a cup a few times a day (you can also add a teabag if preferred) and it really helps sore throats/cough/headaches etc.

Try Medised then, I find it helps but never stops me hearing dd2

The ONLY thing that works is codeine linctus aka pholcodeine.

It suppresses the cough reflex, so if you have a chesty, productive cough you musn't take it all the time. You take it to give a few hours relief to rest your muscles and allow your throat and chest to recover.

In between you do steam and menthol inhalations and drink an infusion of fresh ginger root and honey.

If the cough is productive - ie if lots of stuff rattling in your chest, you can take Benylin expectorant cough mixture, which is designed to open up your airways, liquify the gunk and MAKE you cough it up.

You can buy codeine linctus/pholcodeine OTC in any chemist.

Benelyn never made me over tired CharChar

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2008 16:26

Maybe I'll get some then. Not keen on the codeine as I'm still bfing DD and there is a low risk of it affecting them iirc. Shame as it sounds really good. I might see if DP can pick up some benelyn after work, I need some relief from this stupid cough. Thanks

When DH had bronchitis he was told by the doctor that cough medicines didn't work. He recommended hot steam (head over a bowl of water or a hot bath) as apparently the moisture helps.

Good luck.

CharCharGaboriaInExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2008 16:36

Thanks, will do some steaming after dd's in bed then. I think the heating exacerbates it as it makes all my passages dry and tickly. Can't keep it off though, we'd freeze to death!
