How am I meant to take Prednisolone? And will they affect my BF toddler?

I've just been prescribed a reducing course of Prednisolone. I know how many tablets to take a day, but are these meant to be taken at once or divided out over the day? Am so dreading taking these!

Also, I've been taking a constant dose for a few weeks and continuing to BF my 2 yo. Will the increased dose affect her?

I think you take it as single dose once a day.

You should ask your DR about the bf thing.

Thats a definate no to prednisolone whilst BF

babypowder · 31/12/2008 11:20

thanks for that. I have checked Kelly Mom and with the doctor, and it seems Prednislone is safe when BF. Shellye, did you have a bad experience with it?

Have you checked with the pharmacist?
I'd be very surprised if taking a steroid like this was wise when BF.

babypowder · 31/12/2008 11:48

Have just checked with the pharmacist - according to the BNF it is safe up to 40mg a day, so I'm fine. Anything over 40mg needs to be monitored.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

My husband is a doctor and he happened to be stood over my shoulder whilst I was reading this. He was the one to say it was unsafe.

emma1977 · 31/12/2008 16:24

Pred is safe when BFing unless in industrial quantities!

Take the tablets as one full dose per day (which may be up to 8 tablets), don't split it into divided doses unless this is what you've been advised.

babypowder · 31/12/2008 17:22

Sorry, Shellye didn't realise that it was advice fom a doctor - just wondered if you had had some adverse reaction. The list of side effects is so horrendous ...

I'm totally confused now. The advice I've been given seems to match what emma1977 is saying. So I've taken my dose for the day!
