Are there any iron supplements that are "gentler" on the, ahem, digestive system?

I'm fairly certain that I'm anaemic again (skin, hair, nails all crap, tired, mildly out of breath from time to time). Last time I was anaemic I was prescribed iron supplements. they worked, but the havoc they wreacked on my bowels was intolerable. are there any alternatives?

Oh, spatone. I won't touch 'ferrous sulphate' (?) with a bargepole. Spatone you can get usually in tescos etc. Put it in orange juice

Rookietherednosedreindeer · 23/12/2008 19:58

Have you tried spatone supplements. They are liquid that you add to fruit juice and unfortunately are quite pricey, about £8.00 for 30, but I used them when pregnant and when I feel run down and find no after effects, other than having more vim and vigour.

spatone

wonderful stuff and on 3 for 2 again at boots at the moment

you just add it to orange juice/water...it doesn't taste great, but does the job with no side effects. I love it!

thank-you ladies, you are marvellous . I had heard rumours of such a product, and will definitely give it a whirl.

I used to have Floradix......I suppose it's not being made any more

It was made out of cabbages & beetroot & stuff

popsycal · 23/12/2008 20:03

i have a full box bar one sachet f spatone if you want it
cost about 6 quid bbut stick a fiver in a children;s charity box and it is yours

spicemonster · 23/12/2008 20:04

Floradix was being made last year. Why would it have stopped? Surely not a victim of credit crunch?

PaddingtonBore · 23/12/2008 20:06

popsy - that sound fair enough to me. Many thanks. Can I email you?

spicemonster......i was implying how old I am feel

spicemonster · 23/12/2008 20:46

LOL - that makes me feel better. I would hate to lose floradix - it was the only time someone was kind to me post-natally

FrayedKnot · 23/12/2008 20:54

You can still get floradix.

You can also get a non-yeast version - Floravital - which I take from time to time.

ThingOne · 23/12/2008 21:02

You can get ferrous fumarate on prescription instead of ferrous sulphate. It's not so harsh on the system. Didn't either upset my tummy or make me constipated. It costs a bit more to the the GP than fs but you can ask for it.
