I am 22 weeks pg and entire family has been down with thic coldy bug thats been going round. Feeling much better today now the shaking has stopped but my nose is totally blocked and I can't sleep. it gets worse when i lay down, even if i'm propped up. Seem to get this weird vacuum thing whenever i swallow. Any ideas how i can clear my nose and get to sleep? Am feeling very frustrated and sorry for myself

Olbas Oil can really help, although if you haven't got any that won't help much.

I also find that lying on one side can help to clear one nostril so I can breathe through one side. As that gradually blocks again, turn over to clear the other one. This technique usually helps me to get some sleep at least. Hope you feel better soon.

Odd suggestion but from a friend who is from Singapore - try slicing an onion and putting it on a plate near your bed.

Otherwise some other mild remedy like olbas oil on a tissue or karvol?

How about a warm bath? Or a steam bath over a bowl of water?

Hope you feel better soon X

I'll give the onion a go! Haven't got any karvol or olbas oil but will go and get some tomorrow! And will try steam too. Off to boil the kettle and find an onion! Thank you x

do you have any saline nasal/eye drops? that should help flush it out

scrambled · 16/12/2008 23:52

Hmmm. No. Not very well prepared for me! Plenty of meds for DD and DH though.............

isn't that always the way - same in this house

good luck with the onion

So the onion and the steam aren't doing much - does anyone think that tsking a mucron tablet - just one - would really be that dangerous when pg?

If Mucron is a decongestant, its not recommended during pregnancy as it can dry up your milk (as per my midwife).

Otrivine nasal spray. Unblocked almost instantly.

olivo · 17/12/2008 20:13

otrivin not recommende when pg - i used to live on the stuff and really struggled when first pg and couldn't use it.
have you tried a saline spray / drops? i now use one called something like sterimar - totally safe for pg, children etc. costs about 4 or 5 pound but lasts for a while.

Vicks under the nose.
