Urgent advice needed from fellow tranexamic acid takers .... please

I take tranexamic acid for really heavy periods and in main it does the trick. Today though I am bleeding soooo heavily - such that I am having to go to the toilet every 20-30 minutes or so. I am so desperate to go to bed early as both ds and I have this virus and I really can't afford to be up all night on top of everything else. I will probably be up with him as it is! Anyway, the long and short of this waffle is that I was wondering whether it is safe to take a much higher dose of the tranexamic acid to see whether I can slow things down a little. I have taken 2 tablets 3 times today ... just wondered whether anyone has taken any more than that?

Hi sorry I don't have any answers for you but why don't you give NHS Direct a ring. I'm sure someone there will be able to help.

bodiddly · 16/12/2008 21:21

thanks ... I am sure they will say just stick with the stated dose .. but I am sure I heard of someone on here that takes much more ... thanks anyway!

Mine is much improved since having a Mirena coil, but I was taking up to 3 x 3 times a day, I would take another tablet and see if it settles enough for you to go to bed. Hope that helps. The only problem I noticed was stomach cramps.

EvenstarofWonder · 16/12/2008 22:46

Should add that the instructions on my packet said up to 3 anyway

bodiddly · 17/12/2008 10:10

thanks .... took another tablet and it did nothing .. I was up every half an hour all night ... grrr!

moopymoo · 17/12/2008 10:12

another to second the mirena coil - I have gone from being like you to virtually not noticing my periods , which is massivley liberating. I know the mirena gets some bad press on here but really, it has been life changing for me.

bodiddly · 17/12/2008 10:49

I have heard that about the coil but we are thinking about ttc our second so there doesn't seem much point. The TA seems to have been doing the trick until this time round. I wonder whether there is a link between the heaviness of this period and the colposcopy I had earlier this month! I was certainly later than usual and I have never seen anything like this!

I only take 3x daily
but with mefenamic acid too

bodiddly · 17/12/2008 11:32

is the mefenamic acid for the pain or to reduce bleeding?

MoccaMint · 17/12/2008 22:20

I take both interchangeably for heavy bleeding. For the first 2 days every 2 hours or so. But was told off by Gynae Consultant. He said that this means they're not being that effective and I should consider having a coil instead. But I'm too scared to do this!!!
To be honest they give me really bad lower abdominal pain if I dare take them on an empty stomach... Not advocating by DIY approach by the way...!

hester · 17/12/2008 22:22

dp takes trans acid - says she has taken 2 up to 4x a day, but thought that was the absolute maximum. She says if you're bleeding that heavily you should be getting further medical advice.

bramblebooks · 17/12/2008 22:30

mocca - mirena coil = no periods happy!! I was having to stay home in the bathroom for a couple of days each month otherwise.

MoccaMint · 17/12/2008 23:40

bramblebooks, I know, I know but I'm too scared of the pain when they measure it or getting a womb perforation.
I have no doubt that most women are very happy with theirs but those few stories of women being in pain or bleeding continuously for a few weeks keep on putting me off...
Have gone as far as booking the appointment but ended up canceling! Oh well...!

MoccaMint · 17/12/2008 23:41

not advocating MY DIY approach

psychohohohoho · 17/12/2008 23:42

I am gonna add my name to those who took these meds for heavy periods and then got a mirena coil..........and it has worked well for me (altho I took 6mths to get used to it).

lilolilbethlehem · 18/12/2008 00:12

sorry, just seen this. I routinely take 2 tablets 4 times a day on the heaviest days - as prescribed by the doctor. You have my sympathy, it's a nightmare isn't it? Tranexamic acid, super plus extra tampons and 2 x heavy duty pads and still can't get through the night!

bodiddly · 18/12/2008 10:06

if i weren't considering ttc I would probably opt for a coil though I have to admit I am not keen on the idea. That said there isn't much point at the moment. I definitely think I have lost too much this time round - maybe it feels worse because I have got this horrible virus as well. Think I will take some iron tablets and then go and see the doctor again after Christmas. Thanks for your help everyone.

OP posts:
lilolilbethlehem · 18/12/2008 11:32

do take iron tablets - tho take advice from a pharmacist first if TTC. Excessive blood loss can cause iron depletion but paradoxically it is also thought that lack of iron can cause heavy menstrual bleeding. So extra iron might help anyway, I think it did slightly for me.

HELP!!!!!! i hate been a woman on my periods ....

Sawyer64 · 30/01/2009 22:04

My doc said the most important thing is to take them as soon as you start to bleed,or even as soon as you get some instinct you are going to start,as getting them into your system early works better.

NurseA · 07/10/2010 21:38

Bodiddly and Guardianangel, you should only take Tranexamic acid for four days, no more. I agree, I believe the Mirena coil would be your best answer. Its Progesterone based, so no risks re breast cancer. Its a life saver, believe me! I mirror all your symptoms. My Sister is a GP an she swears by it, she has one! If you want to stop your periods for a holiday etc, ask your GP for Norethisterone.Start taking it 2 days before you are due to bleed and continue until you want to stop. One tab three times a day. Try it, you wont be disappointed.

lottiebean · 24/04/2012 08:45

I have super heavy bleeding plus huge clots. I tried the coil like users here are describing. After 3 months my uterus literally propelled it out one night at 3 am! Unreal. I have now gone back on the pill but having to use marvelon which has horrid side effects and I still bleed for 16 days. I have to use ta and ma to help in heaviest times and bleeding has reduced by about half. I find that the menafamic acid stops the uterine contractions. I always take iron after my levels went to an 8. I'm going to try a natural approach next and use agnus castus if I can get through enough cycles to make it work. Also some herbal medicine diet and destressing. Well I've got to give it a go.

Catnip2018 · 27/05/2018 15:51

I have the same problem. Just wondering if there has been any answers for you or anyone else on this thread?
