Hiya - yesterday I developed a bit of a cough - the kind you get with a bad cold where it hurts your chest a bit to cough and you bring up yukky stuff.... This morning i coughed into the toilet and all the mucus that came out had blood in it. Is that just something that can happen withh a bad cough or should i see someone today? TIA

It is just something that can happen with a bad cough and has happened to me.

Personally I would leave it a couple of days and if you continue to cough up blood and it increases in quantity then see your GP

its usually blood from your windpipe, caused by trauma from coughing. was it fresh blood? if it continues then i would get it checked out, like if it happens again today i would make an appt. do you have green or clear mucus coming up with it? are you getting short of breath?

I havent actually been coughing - basically because i know as soon as i do i'll bring stuff up and that makes me heave!! I have been wheezing but i get asthma so i assumed it was the summer asthma starting- the mucus has been green but when the blood came up it was clear.
I have made an appt but i dont want to waste an emergency appt over nothing!!!

its not wasted, esp if you have asthma. if you can stomach it, take in a sample of the green stuff, and/or the blood

Could it be from a small nosebleed that you didn't notice - sometimes it just bleeds into your throat and if you happen to cough at the same time makes it seems like it is coming from your chest.

Blow your nose hard and see if any blood comes out that will tell you!

I went to the docs and he didn't seem too bothered and automatically said 'so how long have you had a cold and a cough' - only when I said that I hadn't he just said "Oh."
Sent me off for chest x-rays and to go back in a week.
Thanks for your help this morning everyone
