hiya

i have a lovely big spot stye thing coming up just under my left eye. felt really bruised in whole area yesterday and today i see the beginnings of a big red bump.
nice.

question 1: my chickens have had a disease called Mycoplasma, which affects their eyes among other things... they are being antibiotically treated but i wonder if me holding and looking after them may have transferred the infection to me?? no idea about these things... am dunce... can i get chicken disease?? [i know i know, 'go see the gp' you'll say and i will... just id like to ask in case anyone knows. ta.]

question 2: can i put Brochlor (cloramphenicol) on it or is that pointless (its for conjunctivitis)

THANKS to anyone who knows. and yes yes, arent i amusing to those who snigger

Humans can get mycoplasma infections but it usually causes pneumonia (has this not nice).
I am not sure about a stye though.
The best thing I always did was put a hot washcloth/flannel/whatever you call it onto the eye as this can encourage the fluid int eh stye to drain away.
You can go on antibitoics but a stye is not bad, wont kill you and antibiotics are really a last resort. DONT try and pull the eyelash out. Did this once. Doesnt work and hurts.

ah, thanks aussie! i knew someone would know...

so, is there a simple test or something the doctor can do to see if its mycoplasma? if it turns into pneumonia it would be good to head that off before it hits... but obv dont want to take antibiotics on the off-chance.

I am not sure there is a test. Mycoplasma in humans is mostly spread by coughing sneezing etc. It is a very common bug. I have never heard of it causing a stye but if you are concerned then see your gp.

thanks for your help anyway.
will wait and see.

I don't know about the mycoplasma but have had persistent styes in the past. I found that euphrasia (homeopathic) is the only thing that worked!

cherrieberry · 01/12/2008 20:44

somebody told me to rub my gold wedding ring on ds eye once,so i did it a couple of times and...it strangly worked

Drusilla · 01/12/2008 20:48

Nutmeg works for me with styes - grate some in everything you eat for a few days (and it'as nice in a cup of tea!)

lizandlulu · 01/12/2008 21:03

i get them occasionally, my mum swears by rubbing gold on them, but i have usually just gone to boots and got some brolene (sp?) its a cream in a tube for styes. mine usually go in a couple of days.

ah, thanks for stye tips peeps
