Blood in my poo - NHS Direct website says I should phone 999 but I'm sure it's not that bad...

I have had quite bad diarrhea for the past 24 or so hours, with a bit of vomiting. Last night I noticed some dark red blood (like the first period blood - sorry TMI i know ) in my poo, and again this morning.

I don't think it's a tear as that would be bright red blood, IYSWIM. Does anyone have any useful suggestions as to what it could be? I feel ok in myself, just a bit weak from lack of food as not managed to keep anything down for a little while and food goes straight through me.

I'm coming up for 7 months pg as well.

TIA

Go to your GP today.

Tortington · 25/11/2008 10:48

OR A&E

theSuburbanDryad · 25/11/2008 10:48

I have to phone back at 2 for an appointment with GP.

Just wondering whether I should do her a sample before I go in.

This is so gross. I'm sorry!

I'm not medical, but this is a symptom to watch out for and you should go to see your gp. As you say, it's probably to do with upset stomach but you won't know until you see someone! All the best.

GP toady as Anna says.

Poor you. Hope it wasn't anything you ate on Sat night? I didn't eat much (concentrated on the wine!) but had a bit of a dodgy tummy on Sunday morning.

theSuburbanDryad · 25/11/2008 10:50

Well, it didn't start until Sunday evening, which would be a long time for food poisoning to kick in (usually takes max 12 hours, IIRC rightly from my food hygiene certificates!)

There was a random German who was sick on the bus on the way home, I am now wondering if he wasn't drunk, but had a stomach bug which I have picked up?

Oh yuck. Could be. - and that is green with illness not envy by the way!

theSuburbanDryad · 25/11/2008 10:55

I feel really sorry for him, as the driver went mad at him and threw him off the bus, and the poor guy just stood there on the pavement looking forlornly as the bus drove off.

I hardened my heart as I assumed he was drunk, but if he was in fact suffering with a stomach bug then that's even worse! Poor bloke!

I do feel ok in myself which is why I'm not phoning 999 as I type!

I will phone my GP at 2. Do you think I should do a sample? I have a urine pot from my AN appointments with her.

I would ring the GP surgery again (but then mine are LOVELY) and ask whether a sample would be a good idea. If you don't take one with you and they ask for one, potentially it wouldn;t go to the lab until tomorrow, which would delay results etc.
That said, when dh was asked by one GP for a sample, and then saw a different dr for the results, he asked for a further sample as the first GP hadn't asked for it to be tested for what the second one would have asked for!
If it's any help, he used a plastic takeaway tub, then decanted it into the sample tube. Then threw the tub away, obviously. But gross, as you say.
Poor you - hope that it's nothing sinister and that you feel much better soon

SquidgyBrain · 25/11/2008 19:29

Hi - how did you get on at the GP? just in the off chance you didn't get seen I strongly advice you to go to A&E or out of hours surgery if you have one. Although bright red blood is not such a worry as darker blood - being 7mths pregnant it could just be a ruptured haemoroid. Hoping you got it sorted out anyway

SquidgyBrain · 25/11/2008 19:30

sorry just re-read and saw you mention it was darker red blood - so you should get seen ASAP! and yes a sample is a good idea!

NotQuiteCockney · 25/11/2008 19:55

Dark blood is a very very bad thing - it means bleeding somewhere in your intestinal tract.

If you weren't pregnant, I'd think you could rely on not feeling too bad in yourself, and think it was down to the diarrhea, but as you're pregnant, you need to be a bit more careful!
