the cause of recurrent mouth ulcers - ideas please?

I have had three hideous mouth ulcers in the last few weeks. The first was on the right hand side of my mouth, on my tongue. The second was on the left had side of my mouth in the middle of my cheek and was huge. The latest one is right in the middle of the lower mouth, where the inside of my lip goes down to join the bottom of the gums.
I have had ulcers before but never such painful ones.
I don't think i am particularly run down, my oral hygiene is good and I eat (I think) enough fruit and veg and not much sweet stuff.

Any ideas please why I am suffering so at the moment??

TIA

One thought for you get a blood test to check for coeliac disease, severe allery to wheat, runs through our family and can be found through a simple blood test. If the blood test is positive they will send you for a biopsy, but you will have to eat alot of wheat for at least 3 months so you get a deciding result, hope this is of some use.Good luck

meant to say severe allergy to gluten, inclusive of wheat, rye, barley oats! Not concentrating was on phone too! Sorry!

thanks jenaegi but by coincidence I had a blood test only a few months ago to check for gluten intolerance and it came back negative.

i've gone through patches of these and always thought they were vitamin/mineral deficiencies - think its b12/iron/folate so more leafy greens and marmite!

small article here

could you be anaemic or have low vitamin B12. I had quite a few when pregnant and it turned up in a blood test that I had low B12.

mckenzie - It is useful that you had a coeliac blood test so recently. However, if your symptoms continue you need to keep in mind, for the future, that the negative blood test may have been because you are in the early stages of coeliac disease or because you are IgA deficient in which case the result would be negative regardless of whether you were coeliac or not (your doctor should have checked to see if this was the case at the same time).

thanks guys. The anaemic suggestion is interesting as I was at the docs the other day saying that i thought I needed to change my asthma meds as I'm getting very breathless lately (even reading a bedtime story to DD!!). He checked my peak flow and said it was at my normal level and perhaps I was anaemic. I'm having a blood test tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully that explains the ulcers then. I'll up my green veg intake in the meantime yes?

I once had literally hundreds of tiny mouth ulcers at once - it was a deficiency in somthing, either zinc or iron I think.

ill-fitting dentures

I think it's just my age. I get really cold these days which I always associate with OAPs. I know I'm the wrong side of 40 but I'd rather hoped I wold be a fit and healthy oldie, not a pill popping, first name terms with my doctor oldie
