as i used to be on the Hormone mirena coil for 3 yrs (cant go back on the pill cos of high BP). It was brilliant as no period for 3 yrs but every month for 3 weeks it used to kill my breasts...once i decided to get it taken out to try for another baby, my breasts went back to normal straight away.

I had one for a year and it gave me extremely heavy periods which I had never suffered from previously. I would never have one again. I had almost continuous heavy bleeding or spotting the whole time I had it.

mine is fine, but never had heavy periods in the first place, and still don't.

Did you know there is a new 10 year non hormonal coil now.
I think when my present Nova T380 coil expires in Jan 2010 I will go for it, even though I will be 38 then, I will probably be able to keep it in until after the menopause. Normally they would not let you keep a coil in for longer than 10 years if you are under 40 when it was fitted, but I am reliable informed that when the 10 years are up it will probably not need to be changed. Good news for me as that will mean that I have to only have one more coil.

my current one is 8 years, due out any day soon.

I think I've got the same one as you nickerless. I think they're great!

Before having the coil fitted, I had normal to light flow periods that lasted about 8 or 9 days (TMI but say 2 days v light just panty liner, 3 days using super tampon, 2 days regular tampon and and another day v light)

When I had the coil fitted, I had very heavy periods for 5 days (using super plus protection for about 4 days).

So for me, it was short and heavy versus long and light.

I also found that with the coil in I had a few period pains, which I never have without the coil.

Having said that, I think the coil will be my contraception of choice for the future because it's non-hormonal, and I like the idea of my body doing what it's supposed to be doing.

Swear by it myself, no problems at all - probably a case of try it to see if it agrees with you. I actually found my periods LESS painful with it in, bizarrely
