Kidney infectoion? Strange pain lower back right hand side

Has anybody had a kidney infection? I was really uncomfortable last night, couldn't sleep. I rang the surgery 20 minutes after it opened this morning but they have no appointments left today [annoyed at crap NHS emoticon]

It's not as bad now as it was last night so could it just be back pain?

I haven't had a water infection or anything but I do wee a lot (but put that down to having pushed out 2 babies).

I'll try the surgery again tomorrow if it's still hurting but would be interested if anybody's got anything to suggest. Thanks.

I've had a kidney infection, not something I'd want to experience again.

Have you got the usual infection type symptoms? Fever and all that?

As I remember, it felt as if when I moved, my kidney followed a second later, really strange. Very painful, but more comfortable if the area was supported. I tied a sweatshirt tightly round myself.

If it is a kidney infection, you'll need antibiotics, and the right ones, so they'll need a wee sample.

If you can't function, get an emergency appointment.

Thanks. I'm not in agony but it is uncomfortable. I'll remember the sweatshirt idea just in case!

Hi Scrambled,
Don't often post but just had to reading this. I've had two nasty kidney infections both of which have progressed to septicaemia The second one this year got that bad because I couldn't make the emergency doctor believe me that it was a kidney infection as I had clear urine tests and I really was pretty ill. So if your temp starts to go up please go and see a doctor. Sorry don't mean to be scarey and a/bs will knock it on the head pdq but if they give you the usual 3 day antibiotics then make sure you are ok after them as that is how mine got so bad, I took a/bs for 3 days and thought I was ok and wasn't! You often need a longer course. Hope you feel better soon.

I had a kidney infection a few years ago and I really knew about it. Felt very ill, lower side back pain, fever etc. I rang NHS Direct (as it was a Sat night) and they asked a few questions and then told me to go to Casualty where they kept me in for four days. If you are still feeling bad now, try NHS Direct (they were very good then although I think they are a lot busier these days)?
