I went to have a coil fitted at the docs today but was told to wait for my next period then go back. The trouble is, i have very irregular periods.

From march 2007 to when i had my daughter in august i only had one lot of bleeding and that was a miscarriage sept 2007.

I really wanted some form of contraception so asked for the pill. She gave me the prescription and said same thing wait till your first period.

Now i have never taken the pill before so not sure whats what with it.

What i wanted to know is do i REALLY have to wait for first AF or can i take it??

Hope someone can help me

TIA

No, you can start now but use other protection for the first month, I'd suggest.

Should have said, if you are sure you are not pregnant! That is why the doctor is advising you to wait for coil

No, im not pregnant. I want something to use immediatly as DD3 is 11 weeks old today and we have been using condoms but they are in a word crap i hate them, they also make me very sore and spoil the moment (how much of a teenager do i sound!) but i really wanted the coil today so i didnt have to worry anymore

If you take it before your first AF then you need to do pg test first, and then use additional protection for 7 days? That is my understanding.

iliketosleep · 13/11/2008 10:32

Well I did a pg test this morning just to be sure and it was negative. We last had sex 2 weeks ago so im sure it would have shown if i was. Was just wondering if its the norm to take when af starts or whether it can be taken at anytime! I might just go and ask for a needle in me bum

As far as I know, there are two reasons that it is recommended you wait until your period

  1. to ensure you are not pg. I am not sure 2 weeks is long enough to know for sure
  2. When you take the pill at the start of your period, the protection is immediate. If not, it is not guaranteed protection for 7 days (although I think some people say first cycle of the pill). You can take it before your period if you are irregular, just wait a week before unprotected sex, and be confident that you are not pg. There is no medical reason that I know of why you cannot do that (I am not a Dr though).

If you get the needle in your backside, they definitely will not give it until your next period.
