Dropped something on my toe and im in agony!

I managed to drop a very heavy stainless steel tray onto my big toe and my toe was covered in blood and my mum seems to think its broken through the toenail and now my toe is very hot, swollen and bloody hurts! whats the best thing to do, ice?

Please tell me its complete bedrest for a week or so

Elevate the foot where possible.
And while it will hurt, try to walk normally, otherwise you'll throw off your walk and hurt your hips/back/legs
Ensure somebody moves all the papers etc off the floor, I sorta kicked a news paper on the floor when I had a bad toe, the pain was sickening!

I'd be inclined to get it checked out in A&E -- if it is broken and it doesn't set straight then you can find all your shoes no longer fit / that you need half a size bigger on that foot.
