My dad's got something like meningitis

but probably not meningitis. But they don't know what. Consultant has said its a bacterial infection of some sort, but puzzled as to what sort and how he's got it.

He's in hospital on a drip and antibiotics. He's had blood taken, but don't think a lumber puncture. Chest x-ray was ok.

Thats all he knows. Am really worried about him. He's in a lot of pain, pain meds wear off after 3 hours and he's only allowed them 8 hourly. He reckons it takes 30 mins for his buzzer to be answered. They keep forgetting his epilepsy meds even when he asks for them, they wonder off and don't come back. He says a nurse used her teeth to remove the bung from the IV giving set, then flushed it with sterile water. Didn't flush it enough so went and got more water from the tap.

I've taken him anti bacterial hand gel and told him to tell everyone (staff) to wash their hands

I just wish they knew what was wrong with him.

my god where is he in hospital.. the 18th century??????

pain meds can be given more often... paracetamol 4 hourly, ibuprofen 6 hourly... oromorph can be given as frequently as 2 hourly!!

have you spoken to the ward sister... that is appalling about flushing his line with tap water!!!

Well I did think they must be giving him paracetamol 4 hourly. Maybe he's having something stronger that can only be given 8 hourly and thats what works?

I couldn't see a ward sister there, only a junior nurse and a student so if I see someone tomorrow I'll mention it.

but if his pain meds are wearing off after 3 hours, they are obviously not working and they need to up it!!

a juniour nurse can sort out the pain relief issue for you - and tell you when sister is in!

He's told them he's in pain and been told he's not allowed any more.
