So, how likely is it that this'll bring back news...?

My sister had a nodule (of several) removed from her thyroid gland a few weeks ago. Wasn't told anything about what they would be testing for (not good practice, IMO) or why they were removing it. Was just told that she would get they results when they were in.

She then got herself v stressed then because there were posters up all over the clinic about Thyroid cancer apparently. She has waited for a letter to arrive giving her more information. Called them last week and was given short shrift by a receptionist who told her the results were in, but that she'd get a letter this week.

I have been trying to reassure her that I'm fairly certain they would not send her anything by post if it was anything serious (i.e. cancer). IMO if it was that serious she would have received a phone call or at least an urgent request to attend a clinic. Anyways, she has got a letter today with no information in, except requesting that she attend a clinic next Wednesday.

Does this sound ominous to anybody? If they had found cancer, would they not call and speak with her over the phone? I have been trying to be upbeat and optimistic, but now feel a bit wobbled by it myself. What might we expect? Feel a bit worried TBH...

tbh it does sound a bit dodgy but I would be quite reasured by the fact that she has been dealt with quickly and the fact that the appointment has been made for over a week away. Personally if I was your sister I would phone and tell them that I was getting myself in a right state and couldnt wait a whole week before I got results and could they discuss it over the phone. I would be a wreck in a weeks time. Try getting her to phone them. Did she have any symptoms etc that made her get these nodules removed.

Just found this statement on line, hope it helps you feel better.

The vast majority of thyroid nodules are caused by benign conditions, and Remember, 99% of nodules in the thyroid gland are benign,

gokwancarr · 04/11/2008 17:27

the nodules or samples from them would be tested for cancer, and the result whether good or bad would be discussed in person, not in a letter as this is classified as confidential info, and a letter could fall into anyones hands. so far it sounds like your sister's treatment is standard, at least at hosp i work at it is. hope everything is ok for your sis xx

Not dodgy at all imo. You don't get results over the phone unless it's something like a very simple blood test at the GP. You always get an appointment at the hospital to discuss your case with the doctor. A receptionist would be completely unable to answer any questions your sister might have.

It all sounds as if it is being dealt with quickly. Hope all is well.
