Chicken pox - in horrible places! What can I do?

Great, DD2 (2yo) came down with it yesterday. It has erupted everywhere, but particularly "down below" where she must have 50 blisters spreading from the bum to the front bum. Feel so sorry for her, she won't let me near to put calamine on. Have given her Medised to help to knock her out as she didn't sleep last night at all (great for me)!

We're off to Eurodisney on Monday, so am hoping it will have gone by then. How long does it take to go? Any tips on how to ease the discomfort? Thanks.

Few spoonfuls of Bicarb of soda in the bath is good

Poor litltel thing You could bathe her in a tepid bath with a teaspoon or two of bicarb of soda and try Piriton for the irritation.
She should be much better by Monday -s cabbed and hopefully most of the spots fading. Has your dd1 had it ? If not she could come out with it 10- 21 days after dd2 started, so possibly as early as middle of next week.

Porridge oats in an old stocking and placed in the bath with her may help. Hope she's feeling better for eurodisney.

luckily, DD1 has already had it - but off to visit family this weekend and my mum is worried about shingles, so don't think we can go

hate to be a harbinger of doom and gloom - but... I would want to know (and I know this isn't the purpose of the thread) - are you flying to Eurodisney? have heard airlines can be funny about letting kiddies on with chicken pox even if scabbed over. Lavender oil in the bath seemed to help ds. Poor little dd

Bicarb is good, as the others have said, or you could try diluted savlon in the bath. Help enormously with mt DS, and he had his all under his forskin, just as it was begginning to retract.....he used to scream in pain.

good thing tho...it should be cleared by the weekend, chickenpox never normally lasts more than 5 days. The scabs take longer to go tho!

Shingles is rarely caused by contact with chicken pox - it is more likely to be brought on by severe shock.

quick to add tho...didn't scream in pain at the savlon....at the pain from the spots!!! (before he got in the bath)

Shingles isnt caused by chickenpox - it's the chickenpox virus reactivating in the body (due to stress, being run down, immune system low, etc). However, someone who hasn't had chickenpox CAN get it from someone wbo has shingles.

Wow you lot - love the oats in the stocking one - will def try that! Thats if I can get her near the bath. Tried tonight - "no mummy, fan tan too hurting"!

Another thing that helps with the itching is to put about half a cup of cornflour in the stocking with the oats.

My dd also had lots 'down below' and they were the only ones that bothered her. I used loads of aqueous calamine cream - like your's she wouldn't let me get at them, so I couldn't dot each one but just slapped on the cream willy-nilly at each nappy change. It helps to change nappies very frequently - normally dd goes through about 4 nappies in 24h, but while the spots were still coming out she probably went through twice that number.

It seems that the nappy spots only bothered my dd for the first few days, but I don't know whether that's because they then became less unpleasant or because I had found ways to help her.

It is horrible, isn't it . But it will ease very quickly - it may not be over by Monday, but at least she'll be past the infectious phase by then. Make sure you pack plenty of calamine cream, Medised or Piriton or Calpol/Nurofen, and give her plenty to drink on the journey.

I gave my 2 Piriton to take away the itching, and if over 3 they can have a cream called Eurax.

I know - poor little poppet. Imagine the fuss we would make if we had that going on down below. Can't imagine it. Seems calm now though - for the mo....

For the same prob used a good handful or two of oats in the foot of a pair of tights. Put into the bath water for as long as dds in the bath - a long bath. Used huge amounts of bicarb from the pharmacy - this was more drying. For me the best was the oats as left skin really smooth. Also a friend gave me the tip of putting socks on their hands at night (in case gloves are too warm) to help with lessing scratching. Did take dd on the plane with spots all dried up (her face was covered) - wasn't a problem. Hope dd is better soon.
