Abnormal Cells......what next.....any advice please???

I had been experiencing bleeding outwith my period which lasted for approximately 5 weeks. My doctor took blood tests and sent me for a smear....the blood tests showed I had anemia but nothing else, but I have just had the results of my smear test which have shown that I have abnormal cells...it says it is at a mild stage and that they will do another smear in 6 months time but my mum had this for years and died 2yrs ago from lung cancer (may not be related to her death but I cant help but worry)...if anyone has any experience of this any help would be very much appreciated. Is 6 mths not a bit long to leave it???

POLR thank you so much for your response...the way you have explained it is so much clearer than my GP had, if only she had said that to me then it may have made more sense...even more worried now though as Iv still not had my period and I had thought it was all connected??? Ive already done two separate pregnancy tests and both were negative so dont know whats going on! At least I wont worry so much about the abnormal cells now though so thank you for putting my mind at ease.

it worries me as i am having my second colposcopy next week after showing abnormal cells what else worries me is that i also have lumps on my cervix and do experience some pain, sometimes through sex and pain on and off during my cycle though no abmormal bleeding just painful periods.Do i need to be so worried?

Well got my period yesterday so thats one more worry out of the way! Thanks for everyone's advice and support!
