unprotected sex on ovulation day- what are the chances?

what are the chances of actually falling pregnant when you're ovulating? I have friends who've been trying to get pregnant for months, one has been trying for over 2 years and yet they are actively having sex when they're ovulating. This kind of makes me think that just because you have intercourse when you're ovulating it doesnt mean the chances of becoming pregnant are high. Or am I being naieve??

1 in 4 roughly speaking

unanswerable question really, depends on too many variables

fertility on both sides, age etc etc

ShowOfHands · 15/09/2008 12:03

If both parties are healthy and fertile your chances are between 20 and 30%

af is right though, it's not a precise science which is why people have to try for months and months as you mentioned.

Your name is appropriate for this question!

For us we can just have sex that one day and have a baby, but it's not that easy for most.

The best way to increase your chances is to have sex on alternative days as sperm lasts inside a woman for up to 5 days and it takes 2 days to make sperm so alternate days means you have optimum sperm.

For example, starting on day 7:

Sex on day/ Inside woman
7...... 7, 8, 9, 10, 11
9...... 9, 10, 11, 12 ,13
11..... 11, 12, 13, 14, 15
13..... 13, 14, 15, 16, 17
15..... 15, 16, 17, 18, 19
17..... 17, 18, 19, 20, 21
19..... 19, 20, 21, 22, 23

There's no guarantees with trying for a baby though unfortunately.

ive always got pregnant after having sex before i ovulated. the sperm can live for up to five days inside you but then i would have thought that if you're doing it at the time of ovulation then there would be an even better chance. i have heard though that the egg only survives a maximum of 24 hours so having sex before it is released is helpful because the egg will be there and waiting for the sperm.
