Have felt a bit under the weather and had a sore throat yesterday. Last night I was coughing and sneezing until 3 in the morning. Today I am sweating and shivering, my nose wont stop running, I ache all over and am struggling to do anything.

I teach and tomorrow I have a new year 10 class so want to go in. Dp and a colleague think I am mad as I will make others ill and make myself worse. But I have just started this job and need a day off soon for a funeral.

Take the day off so you don't infect the class. Take it easy and look after yourself.

I have been on max strength flu treatment and vitamin c for a few days. I just cannot take time off.

I teach in a nice school with kids that behave and I have free lesson. They will get on while I sneeze and splutter

Hot bath, pills, bed. If you don't feel substantially better in the morning, stay at home. You won't be productive, you could be infectious and you won't get better as quickly. Do lesson plans or something if you need to assuage the guilt.

You sound earlier in your illness than me though, and to be honest, if you are only just starting to feel poorly you are going to get worse first, so maybe you should not go in.

I will have to do lesson plans anyway, I can't just take a day of work and forget about my classes.

At least if you at home you can stop and start as you feel ok to do...

I am not sure the school has very little tolerance of absence and it would be such a poor start, only done 2 weeks

ah I see the dilemna. how about as I was advised, go in, show willing and then get sent home?

My sister is a teacher and she is always getting bad throats. She was diagnosed with something itis once and had to take a full week off and not talk as the dr said she would have damaged her vocal cords had she talked too much. The school were very supportive of this as they said its better for her to be preventative rather than solider on and in your case, i think this applies as its better for you to take a day or two off and recover properly, than struggle on, end up wiped out and take more than just a few days off iyswim?

And Pav - for you, given that you are teaching the vulnerable people, I would go in, let them see that you have struggled in sick which shows you are committed and then say I'm sorry but I have to go home - via Warrens of course

LOL Jimmy! can't leave once group starts, otherwise it gets cancelled and sessions start again.

But I might have to have a warrens for lunch anyway, medicinal, of course!

I would go in and see how you get on. If you feel very bad and feel that you arent being productive enough then go home. At least then it shows that you have tried to go in and looks better than calling in sick on a Monday morning.

I work for a company that have zero tolerance of sickness and am expected to go even with D+V !!! so I am used to being in work ill.

kbaby - even with D+V? you are kidding me?!!! What about the extra costs of cleaning the chairs??

Going in and then gettting sent home is a real pain in teaching tbh. If I call in which I have to be 7am they can call in supply but if I get sent home it makes it difficult to cover me.

Well there you have it Twinsets - no going home then, just stay at home and ring up at 7am - more consistency for the kids to have a supply teacher all day anyway...

It is now looking unlikely I will be going in. Have a real pain in my chest area and any normal breath results in am even more painful cough. My throat feels like it has been but and I have very little voice.

Are you at home twinset? I hope you don't feel too awful, and I hope you stayed at home.

I got up for work, feeling like shite, went to Dr on route for some antibiotics/throat spray, and was told in no uncertain terms that I would be going nowhere apart from back to bed via the chemist for some penicillin!

So that decided it for me!
