Light bleeding an cells growing out of my cervix

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has experience of this? I have had some light bleeding every day for about 2 weeks.
I went to the nurse this week, I had a smear taken just in case but she said it was unlikely to be anything sinister as my smear less than a year ago came back normal.
I did have a colposcopy and leep treatment (cant remember exact term) about 5 years ago.
She examined me and said that it looks like I have some cervical cell growth outside of the cervical opening, it's not supposed to
be there obviously and is a bit inflammed which is why I am bleeding.
Apparently this is more common for women on the pill (I'm not) but it may be because of my treatment I had years ago.

She said once the results come back I may need to have some kind of freezing treatment done by her or by the hospital because of my previous medical history.

I have never heard of this before. She did say what the term was but I can't remember.Has anyone had this? What was the treatment like?

There's a few names that medics use for this, the ones I can think of off the top of my head are cervical ectropion or cervical eversion. I used to work in cytology, and it was one of the most common reasons for women to come back early for their smear because they were bleeding when they shouldn't have been.

You usually have one type of cell on the outside of the cervix that is tougher (it's got several layers) because the vagina is slightly acidic. Inside the cervix, the other type of cell is only one layer thick and isn't as resilient. The part where the two types of cells meet is called the transformation zone, or squamo columnar junction and this "moves" depending on your age, or if you're pregnant (or on the pill).

It just means that this part that is usually safely tucked away is exposed and a bit fragile. It can bleed quite easily, which is a nuisance.

I have had this problem too, and was going to get mine cauterised to stop the bleeding. In the end, I just used a different type of contraception and haven't had any problems for a while. I hope you get yours sorted out too.

yup- cervical erosion- I had one aged 24 long before kids- it can be brought on by hormones etc- i think mine was maybe a result of using the pill.

I had it cauterised under a GA but i think now there is an easier way to deal with it- it is not dangerous, just a nuisance.
