Diarrhoea causing nappy rash - anything I can do to help DS?

Nearly 8MO DS has had pooey nappies for the last 36 hours, runnier than normal (sorry if tmi). Last night he screamed for about an hour before going to bed (normally a very chilled out little chap) as it had caused painful nappy rash.

Is there anything I can do to help him or does he just need to sleep and ride it out? He's BF & we're doing BLW - should I stop the solids until it clears up? How do you tell what's caused it or does it just happen for no reason?

current advise is to carrying on feeding as normal, milk and solids.

DON@T use baby wipes, just water and cotton, or dip him straight in sink.

Let air at bottom as much as poss, put lots of towels or sheets down to protect floor.

I swear by metanium, if using a barrier cream, don't spread too thick, it stops the absorbancy of the nappy so poo sits next to skin.

My DD had dreadful nappy rash a few months ago, we all had dodgy tummies but it hit her the worst, her bottom was bleeding .

I posted about it at the time and a few people suggested egg white painted on. I tried it and it worked pretty well. You have to let it dry in the air and it creates a barrier.

Isn't advised these days because of salmonella risks or something, but I did it and she was fine!

i used bapanthem when my son bottom bled and it worked a treat. Would recommend it

Metanium is fab.

Another recommendation for Bepanthen here, it was brilliant when my ds's bottom was bleeding. Cleared it all up quite quickly.

Thanks for your help everyone. The nappy rash appears to have gone but we're still left with diarrhoea and added vomitting, not sleeping, temperature and runny nose to the list of ailments. Guess it's just my lucky week...

i used tostop all food for 24 hours just gave my ds cooled boiled water then when introduce milk again my doc advice was to dillute the milk 50 50 with water and gradually build up to full strength. also i swear by giving my son arrow root biscuits after the first 24 hours.

Supposedly that's not the advice now, as I checked with NHS direct - you are meant to continue with solids and milk as normal. I have not heard of arrow root though.

MrsJamin we've had the same problem for the last four or five days - poor little man (13 months) has been so unhappy with it and gone from loving his bath to hating it because he's scared it will make his bottom hurt more. after endless metanium and NO fruit (may or may not be a link - apple is supposedly one trigger for some babies) his bottom is now a lot better. he's a bit too old for the no nappy solution as he's walking and can't be kept in one area as easily and i don't fancy widdle all over the house but may have to consider that next time we go through this....
