Boring, I know, but do headlice/nits ALWAYS cause the scalp to itch?

There have been a few notices about reported headlice at nursery lately

I admit I have never actually PROPERLY checked dd1s hair (have had an examine a few times but not in a rigorous manner) because I've never seen her scratching

Would this always happen, or should I be checking as a mater of course?

(She has A LOT of hair...)
