Contact lenses, how long did it take you to get used to yours ???

This is only my second day of wearing them, and I know it will take longer than that for my eyes to get used to them, but how long ??

They are not so uncomfortable that I can't stand them, but I do know that they are there iykwim. Plus I seem to need to keep blinking else they kind of cloud over or go blurred.

I know the prescription is right so it's not that.

Oh and how long until you catch sight of yourself in the mirror and don't think 'urgh who's that' LOL.

What Kind do you have.
I have worn lenses since I was 12 and the soft high water content ones you et now are very good.
I have never found them to be uncomfortable though, they are not inside out are they??
Takes a while, but now I feel wierd when I wear glasses.

Can't say I remember them being uncomfortable, I do remember that it was weird without glasses and I kept pushing imaginary glasses up my nose!

I did change from the daily disposables to the monthly ones a while ago because I found that by the end of the day the dailies felt like they were sandpapering my eyes (apparently they are only designed to be worn for 12 hours) and they are a lot better if you wear your contacts for a whole day as opposed to half of it. Plus I don't keep losing the damn things, the dailies ping off your finger in the slightest draught I find.

You are not supposed to feel they are there and you surely shouldn't need to keep blinking. And they shouldn't be clouding over.

Prescription is only one factor. The lenses shouldn't be too big or too small. You might also be wearing them inside out. Take them out and check to see if they look more concave if you turn them inside out.

I have been wearing contact lenses since the age of 8. Even with the primitive contact lenses of the time (almost 30 years ago!) there was no clouding, feeling it's there, need to blink, etc.

It took me a couple of weeks to get fully used to mine, not that they were painful but I was very aware I had them in and it took me a while to be able to get them in first time.

If the prescription is right then maybe they need to be weighted a certain way? Mine were moving about too much on my eye so they had them weighted a bit.

Pretty sure they are not inside out, have checked them several times.

My optician said that the eyelid does need a few days to get used to having to go over something in the eye, perhaps it is that.

I can't feel the right one at all now, but the left one I can. It feels like my eye is a bit dry.

I am using daily disposables.

When I wore them yesterday, they were ok, although again the left one did take longer to settle down.

beanie - I'm very curious to hear what you mean by having contact lenses 'weighted down'. Never heard of changing the weight of contact lenses, and can't imagine how it would be done. Or why.

When contact lenses move about too much, it is because they are not properly sized - i.e. too small or too big for the curvature of the cornea.

Your lenses are supposed to sit on the cornea as to totally cover the iris and pass only very slightly onto the white part.

I remember when my mum wore contact lenses, hers had to be a certain way round as she has astigmatism and wore toric (I think) lenses. There was some time when she had to have them altered in some way similar to being weighted I think.

Can't remember having any problems with mine - just realised I have been wearing contact lenses over half my life now .

If I do have problems it is generally either because one is inside out, or I have an eyelash stuck.

CoteDAzur - I'm not sure. This is what they told me when I got them. I have monthly disposables as I am not able to have daily disposables, apparently they don't do them for my prescription.

It was something to do with my stigmatism (or is it astigmatism?) and I had to go back three times while they got different ones in. Perhaps they were just humouring me because I did keep going back to say they weren't right.

I have a little line on them which is supposed to show where the bottom of the lense should be, i.e the bit with the little line should be at the bottom of my eye.

Sounds like yours are like my mums beanieb - she had a little line at the bottom as well.

Maybe I should look into getting dailies, things may have moved on for those of us with wonky eyes

I first got lenses (daily disp) about 10 years ago and they were never uncomfortable. Only uncomfortable if there was a bit of dirt/dust/hair on them or they had a rip in them!

Recently changed to the lenses you can sleep in and it took far longer to get used to them. I have been advised by optician to leave them out overnight once a week and find I only have a problem the day I put them back in. They are thicker and seem to attract dirt much easier! I would take the annoying one out and give it a good clean and check it isn't damaged etc if still uncomfortable think you need to go back to optician.

beanie the contact lenses are "weighted" by making one edge thicker. This edge then moves down to the bottom, not because it is heavier but because the eyelids naturally squeeze the thick edge downwards. It is normally done for people with astigmatism where the orientation of the lens is important.

If you do have astigmatism, there are now daily versions available but not for all prescriptioms, you would need to ask your own optom.

I could have worn them for six hours today but in the end I took them out after four.

It's odd because yesterday they were alot more comfortable.

Will try again tommorow.

Is it possible you have torn them (Or one of them)?

IB, if they are still uncomfy tomorrow, I would contact your optometrist. It is early days but they should be getting better and 6 hours is not usually that difficult to achieve on the second day.

Been wearing mine for 12 yrs now and I remember it took not more than an hour for them to 'settle' into my eyes the first time I wore them and after that I hardly thought about them at all. If you are feeling uncomfortable with them in go back to your contact lens supplier

i believe the clouding is protein build up, so it could be dailies are not suitable for you. Did you have yellow drops put in your eyes so the optician could test if you produced enough wet stuff to keep your eyes moist?

I have dailies suitable for astigmastism, or so they say, and don't find them ideal, (i was given the specsavers own brand), they cloud and don't sit right, i find myself tipping my head back to see better! But i did try some acuvue ones (toric i think) and they were perfect for me...am booking an appointment to change soon. I am +5 and +6 so have always been told that i will never get as good a view with contacts as i will with glasses - so i just wear them for cosmetic reasons when i got out in the evening, or on holiday so i can walk in and out of shops without having to switch from normal to sunglasses all the time.

One of my eyes has astigmatism and yet its contact lens does not have a line on it. I wear monthly disposables, by the way.

I didn't have the yellow eye drop thing no, but he did test my tear flow and said it was good.

Have them in again today and they were absolutly fine up until about half hour ago and now they seem very dry and blurry again.
