Advice needed URGENTLY: Kidneys not emptying properly

Needed for my dad, he's had kidney problems for around 4 years now...urine infections etc and as recently been in hospital for kidney stones to be removed..Problems have occured, they can't locate the stones but can see them on scans etc.

Today he's seen a specialist and had a dye test and it seems the kidneys are not emptying themselves properly...??

Advice please, what does this mean and any idea what the problem could be..? He's booked to go back in for further tests etc in a few weeks time but obviously my mum is worried totally about this....

is it a case the stones are blocking the emptying tube?

thanks np. Well apparently they thought the stones were to big to come out on own, then thought they had come out on own but today they think that they are not emptying fully so thats why the stones are not coming out iykiwm..

Thing is he also has a horse shoe shaped kidney (basically one kidney..I guess...?)
So I think that makes things slightly harder iykiwm, we can function on one but if the one is faulty..?

Just wondered why they may not empty..google says there may be something pressing down..?

it could be the stones have broken up but are not small enough to be passed and are blocking the tubes (ureter)

OR the stones are lodged in the ureter

stones can be treated by lithotripsy (sound waves) which is non invasive or by surgery

you say they can see them on scans - so he DEFinitely has stones...?

if he is not having any other treatment for a few weeks then i wouldnt worry too much

is he to go to gp for blood tests ?

is he is pain?

Shhh my ds1 had a blocked/kinked ureter and had an op to cut out the blocked part. He had renal pain (fecking awful to watch) for 4 ish years. Consultant said he had really reduced kidney function but would be ok with an op,which he is.

He also said that if the ureter had been left much longer he would have had a non functioning kidney.

Not trying to scare you but we listened to docs for years saying ds1 was attention seeking/wanting time off school and it could have ended up much worse for him.

If urine is being retained or flowing back from the bladder it can cause scarring which does have a long term efect on function.Can't they disperse the stiones?

Yep he used to roll around and be sick and groan,god it ,makes me want to cry remembering it

He is fine but it turned out to be a big op because of scarring etc. Worst thing that's happened to us.

Nah he was in the sick kids. Blardy awful tbh!!

Nurse was amazed when i was upset after he was anethsitised (sp)

Was further amazed when after my 9 year old son came back with an epidural,catheter,big bottle wound drain thingy and paddles on both hands to prevent him pulling the cannula things out

I didn't know or wasn't expecting that. It reallt scared me and she just said "for goodness sake hen,you've got a face like a wet weekend"

Awful awful awful time.

Yep he is fine now tho and shouldn't have any more problems.

Only just got chance to get back now...

Well he's had pain and problems for 4 years for this episode...he's had them "blasted" and about 2 weeks ago had an op to remove them but they couldn't find them. Had an mri scan and located them in his uretha and went last week to have them removed. He's had a splint (?) type thing inserted for months now to open it wider iykwim and he's in agony and bleeds often....

Last weeks op was unsuccessful as again they can't locate them but are saying they are there..

So yesterday he's had tests and again today. They want him back in about 3 weeks..
Thing is its taken so long to get here as typical nhs, lost him in the system various times, consultant left, referred to another hospital blah de dah...

agal, sorry to hear about your ds. I don't live with dad but I know from what he/mum says he's in agony and sounds similar. He treis to carry on with life but is not a happy chappy...

OH GOD SHHHH tghat sounds like a nightmare

if they are in the ureter possibly they could remove the affected part? if they can see them on xray they should be able to perform the op in radiology to locate them and remove possibly

your poor dad i hope he gets it fixed asap

Yeah I hope they sort him...Not sure why they can't and haven't removed them if they can locate them iykiwm....

so do you have any idea as to what it could be..?

Spoke to mum better today (rush yesterday as out to watch Kylie!)and she says that following the contrast yesterday the consultant took a quick look at the results and has asked dad to come back, the consultant hasn't dealt with a horse shoe kidney before so needs to do further research...I guess mum & I are worried as this means dad only had one kidney and although can function on one...if this one goes wrong....

Again from talking to mum it seems that dad may have passed the stone in the uretha yet there is another untreated in his kidney that they are aware of and that they are now starting to focus on.??.. Again mum seems to think that dad has had problem for years..dating back to '73 which was when it was discovered he had the hs kidney..seems that problems then were never resolved and seems to have got worse iykwim. Resulted in things coming to a head 4/5 years ago which is still being resolved now, so mum is worried that its been a dormant issue for years...Hmm.....

only has the one kidney thats hs shaped and yes stone is there..think the one in the uretha is gone now....

Where is you Dad being treated? Is he under a kidney doctor - nephrologist or a urologist.
Is he kidney funciton ( blood tests) normal?

Kidneys may no ' empty' properly for a number of reasons ; the stone may be a secondary problem or may be original problem.

Dad is now being treated at Hope Hopsital, he is seeing a urologist...

Not sure if he's had the kidney function test, I guess he has but not sure or even sure what results were....
