DS was playing with DD2, 18 mo, by pulling her arms to make her sit up and then dropping her onto the beanbag - i have just got this information out of him after a long denial he knew anything about her screaming. She was inconsolable - v unlike her - so i gave her calpol and looked her over. She's hurt her arm as she's not using it and even if i touch it gently it hurts.
i managed to calm her down and put her down (gently!) on her beanbag about half and hour ago and now she's gone to sleep. this again is unlike her, she never falls asleep in the sitting room and has already had her nap this morning. She did have her MMR yesterday so it might just be she's sleepy because of that, she was doing tired stuff before she got hurt - or do you think its broken? Do children get drwsy when they break something?
Its pouring with rain so I don't want to drag all 3 DC out in it unless really necessary. Sorry I'm such a worrier.

It sounds like the bone has been pulled out and you need to go to hospital to get it put back in.

I cringe when I see children and babies being lifted up by their arms. It really should not be done.

Eew - where do you think it might have been pulled, she was a bit whingey about me moving her other arm too, is there anything I should look for to see? She's asleep at the moment can I leave her till DH gets home or do I need to go now? Do you think that's why she's gone to sleep? I do tell DS to not play with her like a doll, he does it because she adores him and laughs but I'm always telling him to stop. i was in the kitchen getting drinks for the DC . Sorry I'm defensive because i think I'm a terrible mother.

you're not a terrible mother but it's surprisingly easy to pull an arm out of the socket and it's v easy to fix. I would definitely head for A&E - your baby is not using her arm, and cries if it is touched, - unusual behaviour, so would definitely get it checked. At least ring NHS Direcct.

It is easily done. Your son pulled her up by her amrs, unbelievably that is all you need to do.

No need to be defensive, not that I think you are, and you are not a terrible mother. My husband pulled up my daughter higher than he intended and she ended up with several hospital trips, x-rays and a pot on her arm.

If you go now, tell them the bone needs putting back in and you should avoid xrays and pots.

My dd had all the extras as the doctor wouldn't do anything as she wouldn't cooperate.

Thanks staranise - will try NHS direct. Just don't really want to wake her at the moment - need to feed the other 2 DC and DH will be home in about half an hour.

Agree with the others sounds like her elbow has been pulled out of joint. A friends DD can do this quite easily. You need to take her to A&E I'm afraid , it will need to be reduced.

And FWIW you are most def NOT a bad mother

I did this to dd1 when she was little.

I took her to the hospital and by the time she was seen, it had popped back in and the docs took a look and said all was well now, but her elbow had probably been dislocated.

Tis unbelievably easy to do.

Don't beat yourself up, but when she wakes up, if she is still in pain take her to A & E

Its hard enough getting her into the car seat on a normal day!
I was having a bad day before this all started - i think my first goal is going to have to be leaving off the biscuits - this is just the sort of thing that sets me off.
OK I've turned the oven on for tea, will take her off to A&E when DH gets home.

It is fine. It was an accident and she will be as right as rain very soon.

If it makes you feel better I can tell you all the scrapes mine have got into when it was me looking after them.

my friend dislocated her daughters shoulder when she was 18 months.
the child didn't want to have her hand held when crossing the road and my friend wouldn't let go, her daughter twisted and sat on the floor at the same time and it dislocated her shoulder.
they were brilliant at A&E popped it back in not finger pointing not snide remarks just helpful hints about the future.

Hi back now - all's well. They reckon she had a pulled elbow, like you Squonk, by the time she was seen by the triage nurse it had managed to click back in again - probably something to do with the five minute walk acrosss uneven paving stones to the hospital in the pouring rain from the nearest place to leave the car....but we were seen within 40 minutes of being there so i won't complain about the NHS , DD2 was bumped up the list because she is small.
Thanks for all the help and support - if anyone else does it i have been shown how to put it back in again - the doctor obviously reckoned it might happen again
