I have a sore gum which I think/thought was my impacted wisdom tooth playing up, the gum is sore to touch and whilst I can feel it otherwise its not agony but I also seem to have a sore throat feels like something is in the way and my ear hurts a bit aswell.

I've taken 5 days so far of amoxicillin and nothing has really changed.

Any ideas at all? I'm panicking thinking i've got throat cancer or something!

It will be your wisdom teeth coming through, mine are agony. I get all the same symptoms and often have to take antibiotics too. The pain lasts for a couple of weeks, very bad for the first week.

I am on a waiting list for them to be removed but am perpetualy pregnant

The pain is unbearable, take pain killers and rest.

juniperdewdrop · 07/07/2008 21:45

go back to doctor if you're still worried.

bethoo · 07/07/2008 21:45

could be sinus infection?

fishie · 07/07/2008 21:46

have you had xray for teeth? (gosh you must be young) not sure how long abs take to work, maybe not yet.

i had dreadful wisdom tooth probs, in the end had to have them all out under ga in dental hospital. dentist awfully disappointed, they were all set with pliers.

artichokes · 07/07/2008 21:46

If your wisdown teeth are playing up that whole side of your face may be slightly inflamed meaning the nerves around your throat and ear feel it too. That would also be true if its an infection. I get the type of thing you are describing quite alot due to an impacted wisdom tooth.

Who gave you the amoxocillin? What did they say?

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 07/07/2008 21:46

abscess?
dont know why antibiotics didnt help.
did dentist give them to you?

LaylaandSethsmum · 07/07/2008 21:48

Not young really!! They've never come through at all on the top and just partially on the bottom, used to get infected all the time a few years ago but have been ok for ages.

Do you get this sensation of a lump in the side of throat aswell then large G&T? TBH thats worrying me most!!

OK amoxicillin was pilfered from my MIL as I knew that if I went to the dentist ( if I could even get in) thats what they would give me!

It'll be your wisdom teeth. Get thee to a dentist asap.

I had my top two pulled out under local anaesthetic. No biggie

largeginandtonic · 07/07/2008 21:52

I did get the very same thing, it is nasty.

Mine are all impacted, the bottom ones give me grief though. I need them out!

Is the pain lessening? If not then go back, keep badgering as you may get bumped up the extraction list

juniperdewdrop · 07/07/2008 21:52

but they haven't worked? And it's not wise to do that. Go to the doctor if you're worried.

artichokes · 07/07/2008 21:53

I really would not self-prescribe anti-biotics. Firstly you do not know if they are the right type for the possible infection. Also needless use of anti-biotics allows bugs to build resistance to them which means that in future there will be more super-bugs.

Go to the dentist and get your concerns properly checked out .

fishie · 07/07/2008 21:53

stop panic. you have a good reason for your discomfort. also there is a giant big nerve round the back of jaw.

i have got a few bits left inside gums (teeth were shattered) and sometimes they come near to surface and cause a bit of irritation.

LaylaandSethsmum · 07/07/2008 21:54

I know its not really the best thing to do wrt to antibiotibs but thats exactly what the dentist or GP would have given me I was just missing out the middle man!

Think I will go back probably try GP first though

OH you are naughty

go to dentist get them out.

artichokes · 07/07/2008 21:59

You don't know that they would have prescribed amoxocillin over another antibiotic. You also don't know they would have given antibiotics at all. An x-ray might show your tooth needs removing and that it is not an infection.

Niecie · 07/07/2008 21:59

I had the same thing with my impacted wisdom teeth. The pain does spread itself around a bit. Dentist didn't give me AB's - said there was no point. He referred me to a surgeon who took them out. I was very very grateful to be able to get it done privately (within 6 days instead of 6 weeks) as it was agony.

Get them taken out, it's the only way. Eventually they can become so infected they have to be taken out as an emergency as happened to a friend of mine - on New Year's Eve too, poor thing.

LaylaandSethsmum · 07/07/2008 22:02

I agree they may have given metronidazole but amoxicillin is first line treatment, the gum is sore and swollen so I thought it was likely to be infected can't see any other explanation for it.

if partially erupted it could be pericoronitis-infection of skin flap round tooth. If you google it do symptoms match? If so you must see a dentist to have it flushed out and see if tooth needs to come out.
