Thought maybe impetigo but don't you just get one or two blister like sores/scabs?
or hand, foot & mouth?

He's generally ok although off food a bit and couple of nights ago he was awake for most of night - not inconsolable, just as though something bothering him (at time thought it was teeth).

Hand, foot and mouth probably.
Blisters on feet and probably in the mouth too if he is off his food.
Impetigo looks like round cigarette burns (DD's GP says it is a real child protection dilemma trying to tell difference between impetigo and abuse).

Sounds like HF&M. This may be as bad as it gets, though.

gp confirmed it. Said, do nothing, don't worry about it being contagious (!). Also said it definitely shouldn't /wouldn't wake them up at night. Bah.
