Anyone used a local Stop Smoking Group?

I managed to quit when i was pregnant with my daughter, but recently started smoking again - never in the house. I want to give up again for the health of my daughter.

Has anyone ever tried a local stop smoking group through the NHS? Does anyone know what's involved, do they give you drugs to quit? Can you also go to your local pharmacy for treatment?

Does anyone know about Champix or Xyban?

I really don't want to go to my GP, I'll just get lectured....

Any suggestions/experience welcome please!

I stopped smoking through the NHS stop smoking groups. As I remember, it's a 6 week course - the first 2 weeks are spent preparing, taking carbon monoxide readings, and talking about NRT and which one may be most suitable. You then all stop as a group, and meet for the following 4 weeks to see how you are getting on.

It gave me the extra shove that I needed, and I haven't bought any fags for nearly 5 years. I have smoked the occasional fag, and have had the odd drunken night, cadging fags off other people.

Some people swear by Allen Carr. One of the things that stops me smoking regularly is that I don't want to be beholden to cigarettes any more and if I start again, it is only to crave another cigarette - smoking one and anticipating the next one and getting crochety if I don't have it!
