dd has just woken us, crying and with raspy breathing and shaking. she had seemed very tired yesterday and in the afternoon, she sounded hoarse. might this be the start of croup?
she had it last year quite badly, but at the moment, no cough, just this breathing and shaking. she doesnt seem to have a temp. if not croup, any ideas? I'm really worried, she hasnt been ill for months; she's nearly 2 btw.
TIA.

Head for the bathroom, shower on as hot as you can, close the doors and see if that helps.

You don't always get a cough with croup.

How long has it been going on for?

Are you sure she is really awake?

I was just wondering if it is a night terror where the child looks awake but isn't.

When DS2 had croup he woke up with the awful cough so it doesn't sound like croup to me. However I am no expert - just personal experience.

If you are really worried phone NHS Direct.

she is awake, will try the shower. thanks.

They have changed the treatment for croup and it is no longer seen as effective to pop them in a steamy room. Bypass NHS Direct and call an ambulance as they will send one out anyway. Just tell them she's having problems breathing and you think it's croup.

Are you both ok?

olivo · 07/07/2008 10:16

sorry, I had to dash off as dd was inconsolable. it took me about half an hour to calm her, in the end I put her in my bed and she slept on and off till 6 (i, of course, didnt sleep at all!). I took her to the dr this morning and they have diagnosed an URTI; she has been given antibiotics.

thank you all for your help, i was really panicking as last time she had croup she ended up in A and E, and it sounded like she was starting again. thanks again.

I hope she's feeling better soon.
