How can I check myself for nits?

It is going round at the school. DH and I have checked dd and think she is clear but I know her friend has had them and lots of children in the class. I help out once a week and now my head it itching.....Can I check myself or do I have to wait for DH? How big are the nits and the eggs?

The lice themselves are brown and about the size of sesame seeds when they are adult, the eggs are tiny and white, they look a bit like dandruff but don't brush out easily. Would probably be best to wait for DH cos they are really hard to spot. My DS1 got them from school and I managed to catch them too, it's really hard to use the nitcombs effectively on yourself. I used Lyclear which you put on your hair for about 15 minutes, then wash out and comb out the nits. Even though I'd checked DS1 and only saw a couple, when I combed them out there were LOADS! Gross but I'm sure it won't be the last time ...

Ooooh nice! I have one of the special Nitty Gritty combs I bought in preparation when dd started preschool. I think perhaps I will just treat us all this weekend. Eeek. Thanks for the advice. I will wait for DH. I am sure he will be thrilled .

Use Lyclear as directed, or wet and shampoo with conditioner. Comb through with nit comb, making sure that each stroke goes all the way out to the hair ends. After each stroke, wipe nit comb on white paper towel and inspect this for signs of nits or eggs.

First time i had nits i found them by just brushing hair over a white ppiece of paper and a few hairs had tiny lice on. also if you look on your scalp you can see black dots that are the nits pooh eeuch !

Thank you. I have done a conditioner and comb with the super duper Nitty Gritty comb and the verdict of dh and me is that I just have dandruff that is making me itch .
There are no brown lice and nothing that looks like an egg either. Phew!
I am going to do dd tomorrow anyway. We are lucky in a way that she has such fine blonde hair so I am confident she is clear but want to comb just in case. I suppose it is a habit I should get into??
I have stopped itching now I have combed. Scalp got a good scratching .
