They don't warn you about this at ante natal classes do they?

Do I need to see GP or can I buy over the counter treatment?

Our GP told us we could get rid of them naturally by showering in the morning and washing the eggs laid overnight away, or he could give DS worming tablets. We weren't sure he had them but wormed him anyway.

Hulababy · 02/07/2008 20:41

Chemist - over the counter - but a family pack - one tablet each - change bedding and PJs - shower daily - will be over in a day or two.

Great advice from Kerrymum, except I think the sweets thing is a myth.

We will have to agree to differ kerrymum

Elibean · 02/07/2008 22:42

I checked the sugar thing with my uncle, a microbiologist and doctor, who said it was a myth in that Mebendazole works by stopping the worm's ability to absorb glucose: doesn't matter how much glucose is in the body, the worm can't process it. There was more technical detail, but I don't remember it

Maybe kids will crave sugary stuff more if they have worms, because tiredness (from disturbed sleep) is one of the symptoms? I know I crave sugary stuff when I'm tired (dd2 is the cause usually, not worms, and much harder to treat )

Worms are easy compared to nits.

Spidermama · 03/07/2008 10:52

Oh DrN you dirty, dirty mare.

[pushes Pripsen preparation under keyboard]

Has anyone mentioned get everyone to wear pants at night to stop eggs falling and also cut fingernails to prevent eggs spreading.

God isn't parenthood vile at times?

Yes. Go round in a hair shirt stooping and whipping yourself repeatedly mutter 'unclean. Unclean.'

Bundle · 03/07/2008 10:57

my SIL had the HV round once, when her youngest had:

nits
impetigo
verrucas
worms

HV said she was impressed that she fessed up

overthemill · 03/07/2008 10:58

i once had to ask at tescos chemist for ovex (for worms), canestan (for thrush) and nit shampoo. did feel like the whole of the queue stepped back from me. Just another normal week....i feel your pain

mamablue · 03/07/2008 11:01

You should also mention it to your dc's school. They will send a note around, obviously not naming your child, so others can check. They go around our school at least once a term.

my DSs have had worms several times now. I almost passed out when I wiped DSs bottom one day and something was wriggling on the paper! - just waiting on the nits now!

schneebly · 03/07/2008 11:07

overthemill - that remonds me of one time when I was a student I had thrush and cystits at the same time and the pharmacist said "oh you poor thing"

DrNortherner · 03/07/2008 11:13

Oh yes YP, of course - better check, sorry. Was in such a fluster about getting rid of the blighters I forgot about that!
