DD keeps getting nosebleeds! Is this anything to worry about?

In the last week DD who is 14 has had 6 nosebleeds, today she has had 2! They are quite full on bleeds, not little ones.

She says one side of her nose aches and then it bleeds.

I asked her has she been routing around and she assures me she hasn't (but already knew that answer, as she gets stressed if she sees anyone routing around!)

Obviously this is not normal, but is it anything to worry about?

ooh.....my DH gets lots, as does my DD2 and DD3.

down to hayfever apparently!!!

DH and DD2 have now had to be cauterised, altho for DH it hasnt worked well. DD2 is now okish (she has tiny bleeds only now, not long heavy ones which lad us to the docs),and DD3 will be havong to go docs soon about them I am thinking.

DD2 however still gets 'nose ache' (its hard to describe, she likens it to a headache in her nostril).

they can also be linked to stress and high waether pressure.

chocbiscuits · 01/07/2008 21:56

Just wondering if she bumped it since Ds had a few bleeds in a row after he'd bumped his nose one time.

KaySamuels · 01/07/2008 21:59

I used to have nose bleeds all the time as a child and had to keep a nose bleed diary! I grew out of them if that's any consolation.

Never thought to link it with hayfever, mine is terrible at the mo!

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/07/2008 22:02

She has just said that before she gets a nosebleed she gets a headache.

Wonder if it is hayfever, DH suffers really bad with hayfever, but its continuous sneezing and heavy col symptoms, not nosebleeds.

I never linked to hayfever, t'was the doc that did as they seem to occur mainly in may/june/july.

they do get nosebleeds other times, but in these months they wake with them, they have several each day, and they also seem to have almost continuous headaches too!!!

worrybum · 01/07/2008 23:01

dd (8) has hayfever and suffers with nosebleeds in summer months only - gp assured me that it is linked

katiekkrruunncchh · 01/07/2008 23:38

Fingers crossed thats all it is!

I had loads of nosebleeds as a child, had my nose cauterised several times, dont remember it hurting though. One nosebleed was so bad I had to call an ambulance (I was fifteen).
The nosebleed stopped as soon as it arrived.
I have hayfever too.

worrybum · 02/07/2008 10:17

speak to her gp - dd has been prescribed an antibiotic nasal cream to use during the summer months which really improves things (i don't know how it works but presume that it has something to do with reducing inflamation up there???)

katiekkrruunncchh · 02/07/2008 22:03

Went to the GP this afternoon, and he found like a spot/thing that the scab keeps coming off and that is what is causing the nose bleeds. He has prescribed her some cream which he is hoping will help cover the spot/thing. Unfortunately for her, when she puts the cream up her nose, she is to massage it gently. Trouble is it then makes her nose bleed!

The GP has said if she is still having nose bleeds on Monday then he will refer her to an ENT specialist to have it cauterized!(sp) Poor thing is terrified.

Oh and he doesn't think its hay fever!

Poor thing has just had her 4th nosebleed of the day! Think its going to be along night, all she did was cough!

My ds (12) has had nosebleeds for years. He had it cauterized but sneezed it out in an embroidery shop right by piles of white linen!

He has naseptin to put up his nose. Best way to massage it is by holding the outside of the nostril and gently moving the fingers as opposed to massaging it in with your digit in your nostril.

I am told he will grow out of it. Tends to be worse when he's stressy, or it's very hot.

katiekkrruunncchh · 03/07/2008 19:20

Scaryteacher, that is the cream that DD has been prescribed. Trouble is when she massages her nose it makes it bleed.

She has had 3 today, I do feel sorry for her.

I will try and get her to massage it that way, trouble is her nose is very sore.

Had to take DD back to the GP this morning as she was still having small nose bleeds, thankfully no where near the size she was having!

GP has decided to refer her the the ENT Consultant. Poor DD is supposed to be going away with the school on Saturday. Thank heavens for BUPA!

Fingers crossed for her!
