Mosquito bite, swollen ankle, pic included

Last year, my ankle randomly became swollen, painful and bruised. I went to gp who thought it might be reactive arthritis. Tests done and all negative. Forgot about it. 2 weeks ago, was bitten by 3 mosquitos on the same ankle. Same big reaction but worse this time. Ankle is swollen, pitting edema, a little red, even my toes are swollen now. Reaction only appeared 12 days after I was bitten which is odd. Anyone else react like this? Antihistamines are doing sod all! Currently just elevating. It's been 2 days of swelling and pain now. Wonder if initial swelling a year ago was mozzie bites!

P.s. ignore the dodgy tan lines!

I am not a doctor. But I would say those bites are infected and you need antibiotics, probably pretty urgently.

HappyNooYear · 13/10/2026 23:00

Absolutely agree. You need to see a doctor

mammyof2x · 13/10/2026 23:02

I would 100% get seen to asap.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/10/2026 23:02

You need GP to look at it.

Family member GP looked at it and said it's a type 4 mozzie bite reaction. Wasn't concerned! But will see how it is in the morning.

Looks like cellulitis. Very important to see a doctor quickly. If it is cellulitis you need to get antibiotics in quickly.

Ludijo · 13/10/2026 23:04

Get it checked again. The concern is in case it's cellulitis infection which can be serious. If you notice yourself feeling unwell or getting a temperature get yourself to a&e asap

Anabolicanna · 13/10/2026 23:07

That’s infected.

Agree with the keep a very close eye but I react like this to mozzie bites too, it really has all the signs of an infection but is just an overblown reaction.

The only reason he wasn't concerned was because it wasn't hot to touch, wasn't spreading, swelling almost disappeared overnight then got worse again during the day and the area of redness actually decreased instead of increased (he drew a circle round the redness).

I would try and get an appointment with GP or go to a walk in centre if you have one. I had exactly the same thing back in April on the last day of the holiday in Gran Canaria. The bites were just a bit red and cleared up after about 3 days.

10 days later my foot and ankle looked exactly like your photo, it was swollen, bright red and very warm to touch. GP said it was infected and prescribed antibiotics and hydrocortisone cream which cleared it in a week but he said it wouldnt have cleared on its own without treatment

unsync · 14/10/2026 06:31

Get a Beurer mosquito bite zapper for next time you are bitten. The heat neutralises the protein in the bite that causes the body's histamine reaction. I cannot recommend this device too highly. It's a total game changer when it comes to insect bites.

Good luck with whatever this is, but do get it checked again. I had a friend who had a bad reaction, she ended up with cellulitis and an open wound which needed daily visits from the wound team. She ended up having sterilised maggot therapy to try and sort the wound out.

My (adult) son reacts like that to mosquito bites on his hands and feet. He lives in a mozzie riddled country too poor thing.

The weird thing is I get bitten on other parts of my body and get a bit of itchiness for a couple of joins then it goes back to normal. It's just my right ankle that reacts badly!

When did the GP
friend look at it? That’s not how it looks now.

DeathMetalMum · 14/10/2026 08:02

Back to GP. I react funny to mosquito bites, one will normally blow up, usually leg or ankle. I can have several bites in different places and only one will react badly.

I think it's more concerning that's its two weeks following the bite, that suggests more likely cellulitis than an inflammatory reaction.

On the same day and then a couple of days before. He was right as it is almost back to normal this morning!
