DP has just told me about "blood when he poos"

He came to me very grave about it but I think (hope) he's being over dramatic. It sounds like it's blood on the tissue when he wipes, rather than blood in the stool. He describes it as "quite a lot". He still needs to see a doctor...right?

Yes, he does

Sparkletastic · 13/10/2026 20:00

Almost certainly piles but he should see GP

FazeleysRoyale · 13/10/2026 20:00

He might have haemorrhoids. They can be treated. He can speak to the GP.

gamerchick · 13/10/2026 20:01

What colour is it. Bright or dark?

FazeleysRoyale · 13/10/2026 20:01

A family member had them tied off with rubber bands !

MrsKateColumbo · 13/10/2026 20:03

Yes he does! Im sure it's just piles (I also have colitis which causes alarming blood but isnt a massive issue) it's probsbly fine but you need to check what it is!

TonTonMacoute · 13/10/2026 20:10

This is a no brainer. There are several straightforward things it could be, but it must be checked

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 13/10/2026 20:13

Yes he needs to see a dr. It's probably piles but he should be checked in case it's something else. Don't let im be a drama queen about it, it's almost certainly not serious.

ThatLilacTiger · 13/10/2026 20:36

Yes he needs to see a doctor. My father considered cancelling his appointment because it was just a little bit of blood and he had stage 3B bowel cancer. He's alive now, 11 years later, because he went.

PruLeithsNecklace · 13/10/2026 20:38

Is it bright red blood? He should see the doctor, both DH and I have had this, mine was just piles, his something more unusual (not cancer) that resulted in him having a small part of his bowel removed. He won’t know what it is unless he goes to see a doctor though.

spreadandsprinkles · 13/10/2026 20:38

Must see the GP. He can probably pick up a poo testing kit from the surgery. Dead easy to do.

Footle4 · 13/10/2026 20:47

GPs don’t always recognise anal cancer. It’s rare, but can look like piles.

likelysuspect · 13/10/2026 20:51

You can get internal and external piles and sometimes they're excruciating and other times no pain at all

Silverbirchleaf · 13/10/2026 20:55

Hopefully just piles or an anal fissure, but needs checking out.

My dh actually managed to make a gp’s appointment himself (usually gets me to do it) because he was worried about something similar, which turned out to be piles. In his forty plus years, he’d never had them before.

getupdostuffgotobed · 13/10/2026 20:58

Not an appointment to look forward to (either for your DH or the doctor) but better than the alternatives.

IzzyGone · 13/10/2026 21:00

Thank goodness he has shared this with you. So many people don’t seek help

hope you can get an appointment tomorrow for this

Minasama · 13/10/2026 21:03

He can order an online FIT test - they’re very cheap.

clopertyclop · 13/10/2026 21:13

I had a bit of blood after wiping. It went on for years. I had bowel cancer last year (42) and probably had it growing for about 10years. I thought a little bit of bloood just on wiping was fine and I put off seeing the dr. Please make sure he gets it checked

batmata · 13/10/2026 21:18

He needs to see a doctor. Don’t take any chances.

HoppityBun · 13/10/2026 21:20

Please get him to a doctor tomorrow. I can’t overemphasise how important it is to do that without delay.

Cadeaukatze · 16/10/2026 17:27

If it's not piles, the doctor will order blood tests, a FIT test and a calprotectin test and take it from there. He might need a colonoscopy or another type of scope.

I had this two years ago and had a scope, they found and removed a benign polyp. Still had symptoms, had a small bowel ultrasound, still nothing to see. Eventually worked out it was something I was eating. Totally ridiculous for it to cause all the red flag symptoms, but I am now back to normal!

Only 9% of people referred for a scope have cancer and remember many of those will be very early stage and easy to treat so don't worry.

seahorsessky · 16/10/2026 17:39

He might not be being a drama queen. It does need checking asap.

GrumblingGeek · 16/10/2026 18:20

gp and in the meantime more fruit veg etc to ensure a softer stool. If he wont eat that try medication from the chemist like senna or something, just enough to make things easier and not to much to cause diarrhoea.
