Lump of tongue

Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar?
So 3 weeks ago I was eating and the back of my mouth felt uncomfortable on one side. I had a look in the mirror and right at the back of my tongue on the side I have a red round growth. The top of it looked slightly pointy. I vaguely remember biting that side of my tongue a few days earlier but thought I’d keep an eye on it. It’s now been 3 weeks and although it has shrunk and gone a normal colour (now same colour as my tongue) it has not gone as I hoped!! I managed to get a doctors appointment yesterday who just checked and said I’d need to do and urgent referral to the hospital as she didn’t know what it could be. She asked if I’d seen a dentist for there advice. I managed to also get into the dentist yesterday as I figured they may no more and he said he didn’t know and has referred to the hospital too on an urgent case. I have today found out that my appointment is the 26th October which I assume is from the doctors appointment. I have since had an email from my dentist to say he was about to send referral to the hospital and it was flagged up as not high risk so it would be a 3 month waiting list. I’m going to keep my appointment for the 26th unless it gets cancelled by the hospital but I’m not going to lie that I’m worried sick that it’s something sinister. I can’t really feel it but as the day goes on it can get slightly sore I guess from the movement of my tongue. I have noticed the last few days that one of my lymph nodes is slightly sore too. I think I’m spiralling slightly and wondering if anyone has had similar. Thanks

Do you have any pictures of it?

Dentist here. If they thought it was sinister he wouldn’t have sent it as a routine referral.

what age are you? Do you smoke/ drink excessively?
any photos of it?

Thanks for your message. I’m 46 and don’t smoke or vape. I barely drink neither. I’ll try and get a photo later. Thanks

I cant see the photo but if its shrunk and gone back to a normal colour, its not something sinister. The hospital also dont think its anything sinister as theyve recommended a routine referral

Thanks for getting back to me that’s really kind and reassuring. I think the photo may take a while to show as it’s under review so may pop up later.

It looks just like an inflamed lingual tonsil to me, maybe a small polyp if youve caught it or bitten it. I really wouldnt worry about it, I agree that it really doesnt need an urgent referral. Obviously still get it checked out at your appointment but in the mean time I wouldnt be concerned

Thank you so much for your reply. I’m going to try not to worry about it.

Doesn’t look concerning. Either an inflamed normal feature or a wee polyp.
