Ovarian Cyst and Fibroids

Last week I had a Trans Vaginal Ultrasound. The sonographer said I had a large cyst. Today I've been to see my GP for a follow up after my Colonoscopy in August, after discussing that and the possibility I have Diverticulitis I asked about the Ultrasound. It turns out I have a 7cm cyst on my right ovary and fibroids. I have been referred to Gynae now and the GP said it will probably result in an MRI scan and possibly removal of cyst depending on the findings. I am absolutely crapping myself now and am constantly aware of my right side feeling twinge. I have health anxiety and am terrified of hospitals and having any procedure done. Trying not to google so I don't scare myself even more. After having the scan last week I had a really light but painful period, I haven't had one in ages so can only presume the scan triggered it. I do have the option of going private and am wondering whether I should? The GP did not seem at all concerned or like there was any kind of rush for this to be dealt with.

If it’s a simple cyst or similar and nothing else you can ask if they can just monitor it and see if it gets bigger. They usually say over 6cm to remove, but I’m a year into finding I have another cyst, this one seems to be remaining at about 6.5cm and that’s what I’m doing, every appointment they ask about surgery and I’ve just said let’s wait and if it gets bigger then we can reevaluate. I apparently have fibroids too but they’ve not said anything f about those being removed.
I did have a cyst removed 20 years ago but it was more like 25cm and needed removing as we were TTC and it was making my uterus heart shaped as it was so heavy!

ive recently stopped all HRT too so wondering if thst would help

At the scan the sonographer said it was a complex cyst but my GP did not mention this yesterday.
Im not on any HRT I just take Desogestrel pill.
I've no idea how long the wait will be to see Gynaecology. It's sent my anxiety through the roof with worry, I keep trying to tell myself the GP did not seem overly concerned.

I have a 10cm cysts and a smaller one. I found out as it twisted - the most excruciating pain ever and also constant vomiting. It untwisted while I was in hospital and as I’m post menopausal and my blood test for cancer markers was clear, and the cyst looked ‘clean’ (I had a CT scan and transvaginal one) they released me. I met with a consultant specialising in pelvic masses. He did another transvaginal scan and because I’ve had two c-sections ( so a lot of internal scarring) and mRI to see what they were dealing with. That, along wit’s the size of the cyst and that I’m overweight we are on hold, as he said as it’s benign, I’m post menopause and I’m not in pain they often leave it in situ. But I want it out. The risk of it retwisting means I’m very reluctant to travel as even though I can get special insurance, my particular condition mean it would be a full operation rather than keyhole which would mean no flying home for about a month.
So in your circumstances, as I assume you are of child bearing years and have not had sections, they will likely do a laparoscopy (keyhole) surgery, which is a day op. The issue is NHS waiting times - the consultant said we’d meet again in the new year to reassess (and to give me time to lose weight as that’s an added risk factor for surgery), but the appointment came in for next September! Now trying to get that moved,
Hopefully you’ll get the scan reasonably soon and then have a straightforward surgery without a long wait. I did walk around on eggshells expecting it to retwist any minute and I’m very much aware of it being there but that has faded as time goes on (I had the MRI in September). Try not to stress. It’s fairly common. The doctor said mine has likely to have been there for years.

My first cyst, mega cyst lol, was complex too. They’re most likely to be benign. Have you had bloods taken? Ca125?

Thomastuchel · 07/10/2026 15:32

Had CA125 done and it's ok level was 17

I've been having twinges all day on and off in that area. Is that normal? Just a quick twinge nothing that last more than a second or two. Can't say it's something I've ever noticed before, not sure whether it's anxiety making me notice it or not. I have had sky high anxiety since finding out about it.

I had a 5cm complex ovarian cyst and a large uterine fibroid. The gynaecologist wasn't worried about the cyst apart from the chance of it twisting so I had a total hysterectomy as I was almost 50. The cyst was a Brenner tumour (benign) with a mucinous cyst so not dangerous. My CA-125 was normal too.

Please do a thread when you have had time to evaluate? I know you are more likely to have fibroids 40+ which is when we start HRT on average, but my 3 fibroids do feel really big after being on it for a year. I can't sit comfortably and am finding I increasingly waddle as well as feeling sick when I haven't eaten much as I think they are pushing on my bowel. Like you I had an ultrasound with no mention of removal or treatment, despite having had cysts in the past (which they refused to remove even after 5 years of pain) which caused an ectopic pregnancy by blocking the sac exiting the tube. I have little to no faith in the NHS since then particularly with anything they put down to "hormonal" so I would be interested to see how you feel off HRT.

I had a 8cm cyst removed, I’d had a terrible time with an excruciating pain episode which after the op could be confirmed was torsion.
the op (keyhole) was fine and recovery ok, 2 weeks off work laid up then probably another 4-6 weeks regaining my strength and now I don’t have to worry about it any more.
