Costochrondritis- anyone had it?

I think i have costochrondritis again. I had it a few years ago on my left side.
I think I have it on my right.
I was away last week with work when it started, so it's been 5 days so far. I've been taking ibuprofen but it's not touched it. It feels like it's getting worse.
Hopefully I will get a drs appointment tomorrow.
If you've had it before what has helped? I'm exhausted as I'm only sleeping about 1hr a time.
What can I do?

I know someone who has this, they swear by what the New Zealand doctors are recommending, have a Google, there are some really specific stretches which are helping them.

i thought i had it but the doctor seemed to think i had broken a rib some years ago,
after a bad bout of coughing.
do you remember how it went the last time?

My partner had it - got it from our neighbour! It kept moving around his body every few weeks and lasted about 2 years!

Last time I ended up in a&e as I thought I was having a heart attack! As it was on my left side.
After many tests I got sent home with painkillers and steroids/antibiotics.
I'm hoping the drs can give me the same.

I’ve had this twice. Only thing that helped was strong pain meds.
Hope you recover quickly 💐

I've had this a couple of times now. The worst time I ended up in hospital with loads of tests due to the pain.
Combo of naproxen and codine got the pain under control during the worst of it. Flare ups now I control with ibuprofen and heat, maybe codine for a few days.

Get referred to a physio to get a plan made for you to stretch and strength the areas you suffer from it most. It reduced the flare ups.

Yes I have had it I thought I was having a heart attack. I think drs prescribed me naproxen

Legomum789 · 04/10/2026 12:41

A family member was diagnosed with this some years ago and once the pain was managed they were advised to do core strengthening exercises. They haven’t had a flare up since then. I don’t know whether this would work for you but thought I’d share in case it helps

Gengha · 04/10/2026 12:41

And I think hot compresses as well
