Is there actually a way to boost your immune system that works?

Not for me, Primary school teaching means i’ve had every bug going but my OH catches every bug going round , he had a chest infection a month back, only just recovered and he has another one. He also gets constant fungal infections, if there is something going round he gets it and struggles to get rid, he eats well, bit overweight but not major, recently retired so little stress. How can he stop this pattern of constant illness?

I used to have a gym teacher who swore by Ravintsara (a herbal supplement) and a spoonful of apple cider vinegar and honey every day. He said he hadn't had a cold in years! I tried it for a bit but didn't keep it up, so can't say if it definitely works.
When I had glandular fever at uni my mum gave me Echinacea and black elderberry. Don't know whether it was due to that but I got over it quite quickly and didn't have to drop out and repeat the year.

Ugh I’m the same op! So watching with interest

I catch every vom bug going - have several a year ! And always sick with colds sinus infections and all sorts

Eat well! Feed that gut biome good nutrients, loads of veg, fruit, whole grains, legumes; limit upf, get outside everyday everyday, regardless of the weather, try and stick to a regular routine, exercise.

There is no short cut to improving immunity but you can help yourself by doing all the above so that when you do catch something, your body has the best chance of fighting it off, or at least limiting the severity.

I take loads of vitamins in the hope they are doing me some good 🤞

This covers it!

Drinking or eating kefir every day has helped me break my constant cold cycle. I haven’t had a cold for years. But it took a few months of daily kefir to boost my immunity. It’s not an overnight cure.

Vit c, 1000mg, every day and loads of veg.
Regular handwashing too

gratefulmezze · 04/10/2026 10:44

Hand washing and sanitising religiously

Some upf has been given the green light such as sliced brown bread and qourn.

sleep, exercise & decent diet.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 04/10/2026 11:14

Vit d everyday Sept - May, 75g protein a day, 35g fibre. Stick to a routine, up and sleep at a similar time. Exercise.
The one thing that did massively help me reduce infections was using a nasal douche daily. I have MS and get everything and this has helped a lot. Neilmed make a good one, it's horrible at first but once your used to it you don't feel clean without it and I am never sick after flying or going to a new city which used to happen every single time.

Funny, just the other day, a reel came up on facebook from a gp, talking about this. She said something along the lines of, "Thank your lucky stars its not actually possible to boost your immune system or we would all have terrible autoimmune conditions, allergies and chronic inflammation."
She was drawing a distinction between boosting it and supporting it. Keeping the immune system healthy and in balance.
Everyone on here has already mentioned all the helpful things, exercise, nutrition, reduced stress, sufficient sleep, vitamin d. I do think handwashing with soap (not just a quick run under the tap!) and changing hand towel regularly helps too.

The 'lotsmof fungal infections' and 'overweight' sounds a bit more an alarm bell to me tbh. Has he had his blood sugar level checked recently ?

TheSpottedZebra · 04/10/2026 19:37

Eek, apols for bad typing there ^

muggart · 04/10/2026 20:39

is he taking antibiotics for the infections? if so, that will wreck the microbiome and immunity - making him more susceptible to repeated infections. he needs probiotics, vitamin D, clean living and lots of rest when ill to recuperate.

I'm not sure "diseases " live on a hand towel in your house. If there is bacteria on it after 24 hours, it's probably the type you need to booster immunity rather than trying to live in a sterile environment

violetcuriosity · 05/10/2026 07:04

8 hours of sleep, feed your gut- oats, vegetables, tumeric, cinammon, Vitamin C & D, cut out inflammatory foods/drinks. I’ve had a hideous autoimmune attack this year and this was the advice from neurology x

threescoops · 05/10/2026 07:08

Cinnamon?

momager22 · 05/10/2026 07:13

Fermented foods and lots of fibre. Immunity starts in your gut. Cut down on upf and processed meat as these can harm your microbiome.
Regular exercise and lots of fresh air also helps me.
And vit d tongue spray through the darker months.

batshitaboutcatshit · 07/10/2026 10:17

Probiotics and high strength vitamin d
