Do you know what your figure is?

It’s likely to be pre-diabetic range. So you will have a chat about managing blood sugar and info sheets.

If you can ask for referral to the 6 week XPERT Health course. I wish I had the opportunity to attend this before I became diabetic.

Don’t know the figure. But thanks for your great advice. If it was already diabetes would I be face to face with a doctor by now or have symptoms?

Do you have the nhs app as it should be on there?

Oh sorry, mine always show under test results.

277newnames · 01/10/2026 20:17

Is hbA1c result on there? That is the usual blood sugar test that detects diabetes and pre-diabetes.

I see, I didn’t realise the app was different in wales, sorry!

Have you been asked to fast before another blood test? My fasting one was fine.

If it was really high then yes they may have suggested hospital or seen you quicker.

I’m not going to say don’t worry because it’s only natural. The positive is they have potentially picked it up early and there is a lot of support out there.

I'm in Wales too. Had a routine blood test, a week later got told to make a routine phone appointment to discuss the results. That appointment was 3 weeks later and in it I got told that I was full on diabetic.

I was shocked as I had no symptoms at all and had expected that as my blood sugar was so high I would have been told much sooner than in a routine phone appointment.

You were left 3 weeks being a full on diabetic? Do you mean type 2 diabetic? If you were left 3 weeks as a full on type 1 diabetic you could have died

This was about 18 months ago. The GP told me the diabetic nurse would contact me, I waited 2 months of hearing nothing, phoned up and was told I should have made the appointment myself. Eventually got an appointment and was given lots of info, prescribed medication, put in the system for diabetic eye screening etc.

Yes type 2.

Sounds like they’re going to tell you they’re elevated. You’ll likely need a second test to check for diabetes (if you don’t have symptoms) or impaired glucose tolerance.

Ask about any dietary guidance or education groups on offer if they do present you with a diagnosis. It’s likely that they will expect you to lose weight as a first goal (if diabetic or prediabetic) so try and come to terms with that coming up.

I'm a diabetes nurse in a GP practice and diagnosis is part of my job, so I thought I'd help clear up any confusion on this thread.
Hba1c level between 42-47 is pre diabetes. This is really an early warning sign that you could develop diabetes in future. Diagnosis would most likely be over the phone and the recommendation would be for diet and lifestyle improvements to prevent diabetes.
Hba1c of 48 and above is diabetes. Depending on your age, how high the hba1c is, and your risk factors, this might be diagnosed via a phone call and you may or may not need medication straight away. Most new diabetes diagnosis are type 2 diabetes and do not need emergency care.
Very high Hba1c levels do need urgent action. You can't tell for sure if type 1 or type 2 just from the hba1c level, so if it is very high, the GP would either need to see you the same day (to check ketones and if you are symptomatic) and/or send you to A&E.
