What could be causing recurring itchy spots across the whole family?

Over the last 2 months my children, myself and husband have been getting these weird spots. Usually we can have about 5 spread over the body at one time. They are itchy and hurt. Then just when we think they're going another appears. My oldest started 2 months ago. He didn't have any for about 3 weeks then more came.

What could it be? We don't have indoor pets. Just guinea pig outside and boys don't really deal.with her.

I've hoovered thoroughly. Even the beds.

That’s sounds like contagiosum molluscum , look it up. Nothing sinister but takes a while to move through.

Lcw29 · 01/10/2026 08:35

Oh wow I didn't think it caused it itchyness

I’m only going on what symptoms my daughter had, she scratched them to the point of bleeding, the TA thought she had been bitten early summer!

The virus lasted about 8 months with her so we are just the other side of it. It may not be that condition. for you guys, I just thought it might be a good place to start.

Wow thank you. They do have a firm centre . My daughter has the start of some and are flat and pink. Looking it up I think.it could be that.

My husband seemed to react badly though. Perhaps it's different depending on the body's immune system

Yes that would definitely be a factor. There’s no treatment (according to our GP) just itch relief meds if you want of course. You just have to ride it out but happy to say it does go of its own accord and in our case (and from what I read as was alarmed about the potential for), no scarring.

My DD had molluscum contagiosum, but neither DH nor I got it.

Can't see a picture on the thread - do the spots have a hard raised lump in the middle that look like a little pearl?

They do get hard lumps in the middle but I wouldn't say pearl like

Just to confirm that in our case, it didn’t spread to any other member of the family.

This summer we have had mosquitoes biting everyone. Do you have standing water nearby? We have a tiny pond and think that's where they have been coming from. You can hear them flying around at night.

Or scabies or bedbugs may be worth looking at. I had molluscum decades ago and don't think it passes around families.

ConstitutionHill · 01/10/2026 11:35

Have a look into bed bugs. I really hope you don't have them!

BurntBroccoli · 01/10/2026 11:39

There are lots of mosquitoes about at the moment - I have 6 bites on my legs currently! Very itchy! I use one of those electronic heat pens to take the itch out (acts like the hot spoon method).

Lcw29 · 01/10/2026 13:41

I've checked for bedbugs. Cannot see any signs.

I did think about scabies. The GP surgery has said to ask a pharmacist so I guess that's our next step. Although I always find that a bit awkward

It doesn't look like scabies. And my feeling is there's not enough bites for it to be fleas. Could be mosquitos - I was very surprised to get mosquito bites in North of England last week :)

We do have a lot of mosquitoes here at the moment. So weird

Those look like mosquito bites now I’ve seen the photo.
